Whose the right leader/party to lead Canada into the 21st Century?

I was leaning towards the Conservatives this election but due to some bumbling by Harper and great electioneering by Layton I've decided to sway my vote to the NDP. Especially when I found out they lost by a mere 1,000 votes last election in my riding. I don't really like my candidate (Sid Ryan) but I like Layton. The below link helped me make my final decision.

http://www.votebyissue.org/cbc/q.aspx?q=3Wow. That's the first time I've seen a Conservative voter move to voting NDP. See, Stephistan? we do have a reason to exist! :P

Or were you more of an "undecided voter" leaning Conservative before? Or an "anybody but the Liberals" type voter?

Oh, and I base my vote on platform more than leader or local candidate.

I usually vote NDP (I voted for candidate and NDP leader Ed Broadbent until his retirement) in elections but lately I've been looking more at the leaders. I was in the "anyone but the Liberals camp" and thought the Conservatives were the best bet to do that. But Layton is proving himself worthy. In the last provincial election in Ontario I voted for Dalton McIdiot and every day am regretting that decision. I like John Tory and will be voting for him next provincial election (I'm counting the days). I've never really liked Howard Hampton.
I just assumed when you choose by leader that also encompasses their platform. :)

No voting for the leader is not the same thing as voting for a platform. People who vote strictly for a leader are often moved by his charisma and appearance more than anything. For example, in North America, a tall, good-looking, white, male candidate is more likely to gain votes than almost anyone else if you are only choosing which leader would best represent your country. Voting based on party is about platform. Or ideology.

If I voted based on a candidate, I would have two excellent choices: Dr. Keith Martin or Randall Garrison. But I'm also voting by party platform, so Mr. Garrison will get my X. I don't dislike Layton, as I do Harper, so that helps too, but it's not my overriding motive.

I was assuming that most of NS are able to distinguish between propaganda (i.e. - good looking dumb candidate) and substance. Although....I bet there's a few who will vote and did vote for Belinda Stronach in hopes that she'll sleep with them. ;)

You'd be surprised. I did a poll awhile ago that listed a bunch of different voting styles. While for the most part most people said they chose based on party platform, a significant number of people chose other options, such as ideology, or even "unsupported knee-jerk gut reactions". Or something like that.

I'll see if I can find the poll. If the search function will actually work for me today, that is.

Found that poll yet?
All I know is that we need to get rid of those Liberals for at least a good five years.

Last time I was kinda torn between Liberal and NDP, but the fact that my local candidate for the NDP actually gave enough of a shit to show up for a debate while the Conservative and Liberal people didn't swayed me.

This time I'm voting strategically, I'm in a different riding and the fight here is between Liberal and Conservative. Since the NDP don't stand a shot in hell, I'm voting for the Liberals.

Also, the local Conservative guy is a religious nut who firmly believes that a woman's place is in the home and that women are inferior to men, so this makes me want to see him lose even more.

That's not true?
Vote NDP. If everyone did the world would be a much better place.
If Jack Layton wins the election he's going to hold a contest to see who gets to live in his mustache.

No, the search function doesn't work for me.

If it works for you, search for posts by Equus with the phrases "policy wonk", "dinner party" or irrational rejection in it.

That should take you right to it.

Yes, it is true about the local guy. He set up a table at a local highschool peddling his religious beliefs which included the belief that women shouldn't be working and that women are three steps behind men. I don't want that man representing me.

If the NDP stood a chance at winning in my riding, I'd vote for them as I generally like them better than the Liberals. But they don't so I want to keep the conservatives out.
