Here in the US, we're constantly told to eat a lot of fiber. In fact, there are boxes of cereal that appear to be nothing but fiber (see the SNL skit about Super Colon Blow).

And commercials tell us that we need fiber. And there are fiber products that we dissolve in drinks and try to drink.

All because we are ALSO told that a high fiber diet will reduce our risk of colon cancer!

Have to rewrite those commercials to say that it's good for your heart, or good if you just want to have a strain-free time when sitting on the pot!

No Fiber Benefit Found for Colorectal Cancer
BOSTON, Dec. 13 - Dietary fiber doesn't reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

That's the conclusion of researchers here who analyzed data from 13 prospective cohort studies -- involving nearly three-quarters of a million people -- on the link between fiber and cancer.

"We did not find support for a linear inverse association between dietary fiber intake and risk of colorectal cancer," Yikyung Park, Sc.D., of the Harvard School of Public Health, and colleagues reported in the Dec. 14 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

On the other hand, the researchers concluded, fiber from whole plants has been shown to be beneficial in other disorders, including heart disease and diabetes, so there's good reason to keep eating it.

I never bought any fiber products or any items advertised to be high in fiber. I just make sure we eat a good amount of fruits and vegetables with a skin or casing-like beans, peas, tomatoes, zuchini, corn, blueberrys, etc. The yare all always available and not too expensive.

That, a yogurt from time to time, plus plenty of water every day keeps a colon healthy.

Some people need to belong to a fad or buy special products so they can tell everyone they do so.

Like Colon Blow? - parody of high fiber cereals (notably Total), a man is told he'd need 30,000 bowls of his usual cereal to get the fiber of a single bowl of Colon Blow. Also available is Super Colon Blow, fiber content equal to that of 2.5 million bowls of the man's regular cereal.

I never saw that one, but have heard of it several times. I'm sorry Imissed it.

That used to be my favorite part of SNL-the opening commercial.

The "bathroom monkey" was one of the best.
" I dont know where monkeys come from, I dont know what they eat, but I do know they sure know how to clean a bathroom" .

Then is says they are disposable- a shot of a dead monley wrapped in plastic goes into the trash.

I eat kimchi on a daily basis - I'm pretty sure.

If I go for a few months without kimchi, and I resume eating it, I get the experience they talk about in the Testimonials.

Maybe kimchi is Korean for "colon blow".

Yes, rather like sauerkraut, but in wider pieces and different spice than sauerkraut. Also, it's usually served raw (although it's often added to other cooked food during cooking), and it's loaded with hot peppers.

It's also addictive. If you like it, you'll end up looking for it for the rest of your life. If you hate it, you'll always hate it.

I'm not sure it's the same thing as what he mentioned though. 30,000 times the fiber? You couldn't get that much scrubbing power if you used a pine cone for a colonic.
