Chavez Says Election Observers are "Liars"

Yes, the opposition boycotted the elections. Depending on who you believe, between 25 and 30 percent of the electorate participated. The EU and OAS observers said that the election was pretty much free and fair, despite the boycott. So, what does Chavez think of that?

Last week the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, addressed a gathering of South American heads of state. The delegations from the EU and the Organisation of American States which had observed our December 4 national assembly election were liars, he said - part of a global rightwing conspiracy, allied with the US and intent on destabilising democracy.

hmm, well, if they're liars, and they say there was no cheating, then there must have been cheating. And Chavez should know right?

He did not say that the observers were lying about the election being free and fair.

Well, if they are part of a right-wing conspiracy, as he says, then he obviously doesn't trust anything they say.

I think this is just an example of him knee-jerking again - to him and his supporters, anyone who isn't a rabid pro-Chavez follower is part of the right-wing conspiracy to kill him.

Venezuela is headed for a true dictatorship government, Chavez does not call his government a government, or administration, he calls it a revolution, sounds familiar to Fidel Castro dosent It?

There is talk of doing away with term limits for all government positions,
there is talk of Chavez governing till at least 2030 one way or another,
does this sound like some kind of democracy?

It is no suprise at all. He wants to become the next Castro. It is also interesting to point out his political friends around the world. Iran and China to name a few.

What are they supposed to be lying about? That's not clear in this comment/response written by Jocelyn Henriquez, director of the Centre for Diplomatic and Strategic Analysis in Caracas, and the former Venezuelan ambassador to India and China.

If Chavez says that the observers are part of a right-wing conspiracy bent on removing him from office, then it doesn't really matter to him or his supporters what they are lying about. In his view, the people who just said his election was "free and fair" are the enemy.

Yes, but my well-disguised point is that I haven't found any other news-sites reporting this, and due to the political climate in Venezuela one should be careful to believe what is written in an opinion-piece without verification. (Strange that I've found no reports of this if he said it when addressed a gathering of South American heads of state - but then again, google can be tricky ;) You're welcome to provide a seperate account of the event if you have one.)

And I see the fact that she doesn't write about what he claims they are lying about as an indication that this might be her interpretation and not his actual words.

Knock Chavez all you want but independant polls show he's supported by about 75% of those who count, the citizens of Venezuela. Buisinesses hate him, the poor love him. One side has the money and the spin doctors, the other has the numbers. So far the numbers are winning but the money hasn't given up.
