I find it amazing that they were suspended for this ... a dialogue box popped up and they entered in a car name

Porn came up
And they were suspended for it
Its not like they went LOOKING for porn using school resources.
Cannot think of a name

Sounds like a case of kids vs. teacher in the credibility department--teacher says the laptop was locked and the kids hacked it, kids say the teacher was in the room and gave them permission (or that's what the parents say their kids told them). Who do you believe? I think, if you're the administrator in charge, you have to back your teacher if there's nothing else in the history to suggest she's lying.

I suspect there's more to this than meets the eye. They "just happened" to find the correct password on the first try? Hmm. What's wrong with this picture???

"My son has gone to this school all his school life and it now has to end like this for him."Does this infer that the kid was banned permanently from the school? Even I think that's a bit harsh, whether he/they looked up the porn voluntarily or otherwise. At schools here, you'd suffer severe penalties, but I very much doubt you'd face permanent expulsion.

Thats assuming it was "password" protected some are just text generated image machines

(meaning it takes your input and generates an immage)

And in fact you should not have to enter a password to SEE a screensaver just exit one

Yeah specialy with this out of the article

The hacking involved a dialogue box coming up on the screen which asked which car do you drive," one of the boys' parents told the paper.

Thats what leads me to believe it may have not actualy been a password prompt.

Though I am confused at how a screensaver came into play

If it was a screensaver and password then the images were being displayed BEFORE the kids "hacked" into it

If it was on hard drive standard files then it is a different situation

Well, it is a Catholic school. They tend to be rather strict about such things (and never mind Catholic doctrine about forgiveness and reconciliation. ) But it still sounds like an overreaction to me.

Of course, it could be one of those insane policies that many school systems, public and private, are implementing that allow the teachers and prinicpals absolutely no leeway to exercise judgement. For example, in my nephew's school, if you're in a fight, you're suspended, period. Even if it's ten guys beating up on one, if the one guy so much as raises a fist to defend himself from the other ten, he's suspended along with the guys attacking him.

So in this case, it might be a policy that says that any students viewing porn on computers must be expelled, regardless of circumstances. Crazy? Yes, but that's what an overly-litigious culture does to common sense.

When I read that, I immediately flashed onto some sort of adware or popup, something that might come up if the computer is used at home for viewing porn. I mean, it's no stretch to imagine that--porn stars use the names of cars as screen names all the time.

From the article, it looks like they were suspended for hacking/improper computer usage.

"The hacking involved a dialogue box coming up on the screen which asked which car do you drive," one of the boys' parents told the paper.

"One of the boys typed in a Holden and then this image came up of the woman as a screensaver. We are furious that the boys were suspended."

If it's a small school, they probably knew what type of car she drove. Even if not, Holdens are pretty common cars. (It's what we call General Motors)

Although, the principal said that the reason the kids were suspended is because:

"The teacher's personal laptop was locked at the time and the school has a clear policy on illegal computer access and the boys were suspended from school," he said.

Whether or not he's telling the truth or covering up is a different matter.

You'd think that if they were smart enough to hack and they were deliberately looking for porn that they would have tried to hide what they were looking at or could have closed the window quickly

EDIT: not that I would know about such things
