An idea I got from the "Thread for depressed people". Somebody posted a pic of a really cute kitty in there, which inexplicably cheered me up so much....

So show 'em folks. I'd like to see pics of cute and cuddly animals to brighten up this dull, grey day

The question plagues me as well. They are kinda cool, and having it as a nickname isn't that bad-it doesn't give the impression that I'm trying to be cool or anything. It does imply that I'm a bigger Beatles fan than I really am, but I can live with it.

Why is it that these animals are so cute and loveable to humans whereas human babies are all fat, bald and almost always ugly? You'd have thought we'd have an instinct to find our own species offspring the most loveable.

It's the same with crying - human baby crying is just annoying and demanding - makes people irritated at the baby, not sympathetic to it's needs. On the other hand, a dogs whining just makes me cringe with pity for it and want to help it.

:D It's a giant isopod.

The giant isopod is the largest known member of the isopod family. It is a carnivorous crustacean that spends its time scavenging the deep ocean floor. Food is extremely scarce at these great depths, so the isopod has adapted to eat what ever happens to fall to the ocean floor from above. It will also feed on some of the small invertebrates that live at these depths. Giant isopods are known to reach a size of over 16 inches in length and are one of the largest members of the crustacean family. These animals are very prehistoric in appearance. When threatened, the can roll themselves into a tight ball where they are protected by their strong, armor-plated shells. They have complex mouths that contain many components that work together to pierce, shred, and disembowel live or dead prey. Giant isopods are all over the world at depths of over 2000 feet.
