French Theory on Why Riots Happen

Now I've heard everything. Polygamy apparently causes rioting and antisocial behavior. Makes me wonder why the Mormons... wait a second...

While many social critics were quick to cite racism, unemployment and insufficient social programs as causes for the recent riots in France, one possible stimulus was glaringly absent from their list of complaints, namely, polygamy.

Last month, Gerard Larcher, France’s Minister of Employment, caused an uproar when he stated that polygamous families (consisting of men with two or more wives) were one of the causes of the violence that swept his country for three weeks this fall. Bernard Accoyer, the head of the conservative coalition party UMP in France’s National Assembly, supported Larcher, calling polygamy a negation of individual and women’s rights, which prevented the imparting of “the proper education necessary in an organized society.”

Relating strictly to polygamy: If women were allowed to practise polygamy, and not only men, it would be fine. If we maintain double standards though, forget it.

Given the proportion of women to men though (52%/48% in most nations), it would be senseless, as it would result in many women and men ending up without partners, whilst some would enjoy many partners. Not good.

I agree. Women should be allowed to have multiple wives. It makes it more fun for the husband.

Or men should have many husbands. More fun for the wife. :)

Hey France, pay attention:
Racism went out of style about 25-50 years ago. Because you blame it on polygamy (obviously a shot at Muslims), you are alienating a large and obviously unhappy section of your population.
No, it couldn't be the parents of the rioting kids who can't do anything without being arrested for abuse. Kids threaten to call the abuse line on their parent if they don't get their way.

Now we understand all the Mormon suicide bombings. Oh wait. . .

Well, I suppose that works for some men. Different horses for different courses.

Psst, having mutiple husbands is polyandry (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=polyandry) not polygamy ;)

Really?

you are alienating a large and obviously unhappy section of your population.

You mean they aren't alienated already?

No, it couldn't be the parents of the rioting kids who can't do anything without being arrested for abuse. Kids threaten to call the abuse line on their parent if they don't get their way.

Is this an unsupported assertion, or do you have any facts to back the point up?

Is she involved with them in a marriage? No. Polygamy refers to being in a relationship with many partners, gamos being the greek word for marriage and poly for many.

for those who don't read
"Now parents cannot do anything - if they hit their 12-year-old, police will come to their door. There's a hotline the kids can call to report parental abuse."

Many parents are not French citizens and never learn to speak French, while their children don't learn the language of their ancestors.

Some parents even blame the recent riots on a French law that prohibits them from hitting their kids, which they say renders them powerless to assert control.

Anything else?

With racist parties gradually gaining support just about all over Europe. I don't think racism is going out of fashion any time soon (unfortunately).

(And I'm sure that racism is still strong in other areas of the world).

Name one first world country that legally sanctions racism. 6 or 7?
Now do second world. 10 or 15 there right?
Third World. All of them, I assume?

ooooooooooh, sarcasm :p

Why not the US?
Wait. . . they have laws against that.*

Those laws are poor, especially so called "hate crime" laws. Being physically handicapped myself, anyone who attacks me automatically has more years added on. Vice Versa too. Greatest country in the world? Definitely not smartest by any measure. Anyone else for Presidential IQ tests?

You are skewing the results slighty, no?

Surely a country can still be racist, even if minorities aren't discriminated against legally?

Also interesting. That was the first thing I heard of the riots. I didn't realize that was ignored. Besides, saying plygamy was the problem, at that point you might as well say it was Muslims.
Why does France make its problems with immigrants so damn obvious?

That doesn't mean their citizens are not racist deep down, or that the country is racist behind-the-scenes though. If anything, racism is getting smarter, not lesser.

Even someone as fiercely political as me still refuses to touch Affirmative Action. Its just too hard to side with/for it because you really anger the other side. And I have no convictions on AA to choose a side.
