Oil Burner uses 10-13 Gallons a day. WTF?

Our oil burner burns off 10-13 gallons every single day. We refilled the tank and it was gone in less than 3 weeks (250 gallons). It costs each of five roomates about 8 dollars every single day. The apartment downstairs has filled their tank of the same size once and it still has 3/8 left and their apartment is warm. This is the third time filling ours in the same time period.

Coincidentally our burner in the basement is old and corroded and theirs looks new and modern.

I live in Massachusetts, USA and our landlord is a total fucking dick so getting him to do something about it is going to be hard. Does anyone know how much the law is behind us? I know the attorney General says the landlord has to provide a means for heat (which he technically does) and it must be kept up and in good repair (which is what this would seem to fall under). Any info that could help us force action would be helpful. It is about 45 F inside my room right now as I wait for the heat to be turned back on so I can resume paying money out my ass.

Not really sure, but the law is much more likely to be behind you on this one. Talk to a... I can't remember what they're called, but they specialize in landlord/apartment cases. I don't think it's real estate though.

Anyways, you can always take him to small claims.

many towns and most colleges (isnt massachusetts the land of colleges?) have tenant resource centers. if there isnt one in your town, id look it up on the net and see if there isnt one in a town/university nearby.
