What's your opinion about living in interesting times?

I've heard that there's an old Chinese curse that says "May you live in interesting times". Well, times are pretty interesting right now. France has nearly month-long riots, laid back Australians are seeing a mini race war, the US has invaded Iraq for no apparent reason, tourists in Bali are being blown up, Bird flu will kill us all, unless the greenhouse gasses get us first.

We live in interesting times. Personally, putting aside the human suffering, I'm kind of excited about the times we're living in. How about you folks?

All times are interesting times. A hundred years ago people would be saying the same thing about the advances and social happenings of that time as well. It's sort of like how we like to say "what a time to be alive!" without taking into account the fact that countless generations before us have probably said the same thing about their lives, on account of the advances made back then.

It just goes to show, there's no time like the present, eh?

I don't know...I think all times were pretty interesting. If hunger didn't get you, raging hordes of invaders, or disease might...random rapings and pillagings and entire cities being put to the sword (or the stake, in Ivan the Terrible's time)...having your knee chewed off by hungry coyotes...all make for interesting stories.

Naw, I'm not particularly 'excited' about the times we live in. More like...full of dread. Because there are SO many problems to deal with. It makes me want to go live in a cabin with my family, a thousand kilometres from everyone else.

No matter when or where you live you live in interesting times. At what point in the history of human existance have things been globally boring?
There is always something interesting happening at some level, from local to global.

Well, would you rather be living in interesting times, or be dead and very, very bored?

Easy choice, from where I stand. (Never mind that I'm sitting.)

That Chinese saying is also used as a curse in the Terry Pratchett book "Interesting Times".

Interesting times are fine as long as they are actually interesting, not just disastrous. Something involving a mystic sword would be nice...
