I just lost all my data

My hard disk decided to die quickly and while doing that barred any access to /home/meccza (my username) from rescue-CD. Now I am using an ancient PC and without anything at all except a few saved music files, which were on another partition (the music is all legal, all grabbed from CDs, I bought) and could be saved onto an USB-Stick. Anyone has a spare hard disk and lives in Cologne or Leverkusen? :/ or at least some encouraging words or ideas to configure links so I can use it as normal browser? (this POS is too slow for any decent browser!)

Oh my god, that stinks, and I'm very sorry to hear. I know exactly how you feel... Maybe you can get a new hard drive or computer or whatever... *Doesn't know all those tech terms* :(

Maybe I should back up my hard drive. Tomorrow.

Yes, or otherwise, I'll do it if anything bad will be happening to you! *annoyed*

this happened to me back in may. HD failed and i lost 200 gigs worth of stuff, some of which i got back but a lot of it was valuable work (since have invested in a vague backup solution) and much more was friends' music that i still haven't replaced :(
THEN i had to go into hospital for an emergency operation for like 5 days.... what a fucking week that was :headbang:

oh dear, that sucks! It really does!!
I can somehow consider myself lucky that the mp3s were elsewhere and only 10 gig were used...

Man, I dunno what you two are talking about with this gigs stuff *honestly doesn't know tech lingo, but wants to*, but I've got a feeling I lost more than both of you two combined... I lost everything during my incidint... Lots of music, lots of documents, lots of cool programs that I had to find again and reinstall into my new computer with the backup thing...
...Yeah... You are lucky, I think :(

25 gigs of music? :O how do you encode your music? Lossless or high-bitrate? I mean, if it'd be low quality ogg-vorbis, it'd be more music than I could hear in a month if I did nothing than listen to it.

192kb mp3s some of it. 160kbps wma for the most part.
three of us used to share our cds... whenever i bought a new album i'd rip it and give them the cd itself (they were brothers who had different musical tastes but i liked both styles, so i got to share with both of em :)) and visa-versa... over about 3 years or so it accumulated to a shitload of (semi) legal music.
and now the cds are about 150 miles that way *points* which is a fat lot of good to me
but this isn't about me, its about your loss... sufficed to say, i feel your pain :(
