Entirely car-focused film I'd go for Gone in 60 Seconds - dunno why, I just like that film :)

Chase? Not a clue. I don't suppose the Italian Job counts does it?

The French Connection?
Very good, that one. I would've put it, but didn't think of it til it was too late. Sigh.

The lst two from the bottom are obviously the worst, but I had to put them due to DoH's '69 Charger and the Fast&Furious' '69 Yenko Camaro, Viper, and '70 Charger.

Go to putfile, and search for Bullitt. You'll see what separates the musclecars from the toy cars. Notice, especially, the practically still green VW that is passed twice by the assasin's black '68 Charger 440.

ah, but you didn't say muscle car movie, you said car/chase movie, which would explain my choice of The French Connection (you know the chase part of the car/chase, Herbie would be the car part.)

The original Gone in 60 Seconds. For basically what is a homemade movie, the chase (which is half of the movie) is incredible, throughout the streets of LA. My favorite line is when the star/director/producer is in the park with the cops' guns drawn, says "I should have read my horoscope today!"

The remake was ruined by the cast.

The original is much better than the remake, if you can even call it a remake. The only real similarities were the Mini's and the gold. The plot was completely different.

As for car movies, have to add Ronin, Italian Job, French Connection, and Blues Brothers. There was also one movie on speedvision either last night or the night before, which has to be nominated for most cars totaled in a movie by a single character. He manages to trash 5 cars that he's driving total.

DEATH RACE 2000!!! That was the one with Sylvester Stallone! My god, I have been trying to figure out that movie's title for years!

*hugs you* Thank you, thank you, thank you! I saw it when I was about twelve and the only thing I remember clearly is that it was a race where hitting people earned you points. These doctors and nurses at a nearby hospital put out a bunch of elderly patients and cripples into the road for the hero(can't remember his name) to hit and instead, the hero swerves onto the sidewalk and creams the doctors and nurses. :)

Cannonball Run wasn't a remake of Gumball Rally. While they are similar themes (alright, identical plot device) Cannonball Run was written by original actual Cannonball Run organizer and Car and Driver Editor at Large Brock Yates about the race that, as I just mentioned, he had organized.

Originally the movie was set to star Steve McQueen, but McQueen became sick and it was cast with Reynolds instead, which changed the nature of the film. It wasn't orignally intended to be a high comedy (not in that you have to be high, but where jokes trump the reality in the film).

I would have prefered McQueen...

Yates also wrote a Le Mans movie about a husband/wife team of drivers in a 962 but it never got made.

I know way too much about all of that...

Ronin had some very cool car chase scenes in it. The chase the wrong way through the French motorway is pretty cool, and the narrow lane chase in Venice(?) is also top-notch.

Best car movie though would have to be Goodbye Pork Pie. Classic Kiwiana.

the best car/car chase movie is C'etait un Rendezvous. it's twelve minutes long and i have 8 1/2. in the 70's, this french director paid an as-yet-unnamed-driver to drive a ferrari as fast as possible through the streets of paris at dawn. It's not as visually stimulating as FF and 2F2F, simply because it wasn't made to be. It's real. It's a camera strapped to the hood of a ferrari. it's kickass.
