Will athiests be celebrating Christmas?
Will the NS athiests be celebrating Christmas by giving out presents and recieving them this year? As seen as Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, our saviour. What will you be doing on December 25th?

Christmas in the west is a tradition with layers upon layers of cultural accretions, of which the celebration of the birth of Jesus is but one.
Family christmas, watchnight service, overeating and presents.

What will you be doing on December 25th?Yups. Along with a bunch of other heathens. We'll also celebrate a bunch of other mish-mash holidays on other dates.. Such as wintersolstice & such.
In fact, we pretty much jump on any opportunity to get drunk & treat eachother nicely.
So why do you give eachother presents, why do you celebrate the birth of Christ on this day? Do you dance around a Christmas tree? Or any other old heathen, decidedly Un-Christian traditions?

I was just thinking about this when I was walking home. Wierd. But anyway, I will but not to any great degree.
I'll be having a traditional yet commericialised ceremony to celebrate midwinter, just as my pagan ancestors did before Christianity used the same date to name as the birth of Jesus Christ, because it was easier to convert them when they got to retain their holy days.
Of course. It's more of a secular and materialistic thing for most people nowadays.

Seeing as how Christmas originally celebrated Yule, and that historians agree that Christ was probably born in late august-early september, I see no qualm in celebrating the Feast day that naturally follows the winter equinox.

I think that all holidays granted by an employer should be floating holidays, to be taken when you want.
If you're Christian, you can do the Christmas thing at Christmas, and the atheists can take some other day off, so the company doesn't close for any length of time. And when the atheists take off, the Christians (and Hindus, and Moslems) will be at their desks up until the time their religious holidays come up.
well then you won't be celebrating Christmas as you will not be taking into account the fact that it is meant to be a holiday of celebration of peace and love... I also know that you ain't Christian...

That's a good plan, but the thing is that even atheists will want to take Christmas off, as it's a general time for party and family get togethers. Some may come in, but is it really worth buisnesses to still be open while missing 95% of the staff?

The idealist in me has always loved this idea, but the realist and former small businessman part also knows how incredibly hard it would be to implement and how much abuse would go on. It could work for big corporations, but if you employ just a few people, it would play hell with productivity... unless you made sure to hire people who were all the same religion so you could close up for a couple of days. That'd be a sort of discrimination, though.

Jesus wasn't born on december 25th, he was born around Easter, but there were too many important celebrations in this period. December 25th was the traditional Zoroastrian birthday of Mithra, the Sun God. Mithraism became a rival mystery cult to Christianity in the Roman Empire, and the Christians co-opted the celebration.
Kind of like the capitalists are now doing to the Christians.

the difference between a christian and an atheist/agnostic/non-christian celebrating christmas is that a christian goes to church on christmas and the others dont.

Seeing as how Christmas originally celebrated Yule, and that historians agree that Christ was probably born in late august-early september,
Historians don't even agree that Jesus was ever born, let alone when he was born! Most in the west assume he existed, but then most haven't actually studied the evidence in any depth.
I see no qualm in celebrating the Feast day that naturally follows the winter equinox.
It's the Winter Solstace, not Equinox. The Spring Equinox is the holiday which the Christians converted into Easter (Easter = Eostre (in Anglo-Saxon), a pagan fertility goddess).

I celebrate "Spendshitloadsofmoneytodemonstrateyourlovetoyourfamilymembersandfriendsmas" every year.
We call it gift day, though, since none of us gives a care about the religious significance.
