Just a warning. Since this involves advanced biology, if you don't believe in evolution and are diabetic, you probably won't believe in this either (that whole consistency thing...:D )

This would work best for type 1 diabetes, seeing as it would do little about the insuline resistance that is so characteristic of type 2.

I also wonder about the side-effects. EGF and gastrin work on many different tissues, not just on islet cells.

But there's no such thing as a beneficial mutation! ;)

Wonderful news, especially considering the problems western society is running into because of our increased fat percentages. It seems we're on the brink of so many great things.

I just read an article about a new antibiotic with antiviral activity that's been isolated from a Pseudonigrella mushroom a few days ago. It could be the start of a whole new class of antibiotic/antiviral drugs with application to everything from tooth decay to necrotizing fasciitis to HPV (precursor of cervical cancer)... all because some mycologist in Northern Europe noticed some little black mushrooms growing on his street one day. Gotta love scientific inquiry!

That sounds encouraging.
Mind you, it'd be easier without jesusfreaks preventing stem cell transplants, though obviously the diabetics are a lot less pissed off about that than the quadraplegics are...

Thank you. My girlfriend has Type 1. I'll read this once I get off work.

Phase II human trials of gastrin and EGF began in August. They should yield results on safety and efficacy by the spring of 2006. The enrolled subjects include those with both type 1 and the more common type 2 diabetes, in which there is no autoimmune reaction and the islets make insulin, but not enough.

Not too far off!

I've met plenty of Christians who objected to anything involving the production of extra embryos for any purpose (or the destruction of embryos).

Their tune usually changes when it applies to them. A lot of these women got IVF procedures done, which involves the production of extra embryos - and usually their destruction.

That, unfortunately, is the human condition. People will bitch about taxes going to FEMA until they need FEMA. Many people seriously lack the ability to put themselves in other's shoes.

Oh, I bitch about the Corps of Engineers, who take my tax money and then fail to build to specs - or FEMA, who takes my tax money and then fails to pull its own head out of its ass no matter how much of my money they spend.

As for biology, sometimes you have to break a few eggs - even if you're doing it the natural way.

Now I think about it, do people who don't believe in Evolution even accept that diabetes exists? There's a genetic basis for it after all.

And do people who don't believe in evolution fear the mutation of Avian Flu?

Can you imagine how much wailing and gnashing of teeth there'd be if the creationist lobby were denied a jab for that?
