What kind of guarantee?

Love that cryptic demand from El Baradei - somehow, the US is again to blame for the reason that Iran won't agree to play nice.

"I think part of the negotiations should be providing Iran with security assurances," ElBaradei said after meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson to discuss the IAEA's work.

"I hope that as the negotiations with the European Union proceed that the United States at a certain point will be more engaged. We look at the United States ... to do the heavy lifting in the area of security."

Sorry, I seem to recall that these negotiations were being done by the Europeans, who assured us that they could get Iran to agree to stop making enriched uranium and not make nuclear weapons - just by talking to them.

What in the world does the US have to do with it? Security guarantees?

As I recall, North Korea's demand for a security guarantee was that we would never attack North Korea, no matter what they did in the future - even invade South Korea. Would Iran like carte blanche as well?

Sorry, we await the brave and illustrious and never-failing and super-wise Europeans to bring the Iranians to a sensible conclusion where they stop making bomb material.

More on the same topic - but from the perspective of the EU and Iran - apparently, neither can back down without "losing face". I see. So because they can't back down without losing face, we'll just turn around and say, "it's the US's fault, because they wouldn't give security guarantees".

William Peden, a Greenpeace nuclear analyst, said the EU seemed reluctant to confirm a date and venue for the talks because it already feared they would backfire.

"The Iranians have backed themselves into a corner. They really can't backtrack without losing face. Neither can the EU. I expect the talks if held to fail and an emergency IAEA board meeting to be held in January," Peden said.

Since everyone involved seems to be anticipating failure of the talks, better get ready to blame the US.
