I've always thought Hong Kong Phooey was quite strange. On the surface it's a blatent metaphor for the failings of irrational authority but beneath that there's an obvious, almost propaganda-like, subtle condoning of servience which is at odds with the main message.

Isn't differentiating cartoons and anime like differentiating movies and Hollywood films?
In Japan, Animation is one of the media standards used frequently. Thus, the stories as well as scenes can, and frequently are, targeted for adults. so yes, "cartoons" like Heavy Metal can frequently be found in Japan, with better storyline tho.
as for them being the same, I know alot of Parents who took their kids to see "Princess Mononoke" because they thought cartoons and Anime were the same...
After the first fight scene... they were outta there sooo fast...
and I still remember the parents who said that their daughter (less then 10 yrs old) could rent and watch Devilman...

and to answer CthulhuFhtagn,
Anime is actually the short form of JAPANIMATION, which was, of course, JAPANESE ANIMATION.
so Anime came from Japanese Animation.

Calvin and Hobbs. And though it isn't a character per se, I do so miss The Far Side.
Quite a few, actually. Usually by people from Japan.true, but the difference is, It's in Japan. As I said, in Japan, Animation is a standard that is accepted by adults as a viable media form. You can and do often see adults, sans children, going to see animated films with subjects and storylines that are not for children. Here in America, however, (and I cannot speak for any other countries.) think in a similar form like you do, Anime is cartoons, thus they end up thinking that it's ok for children to watch it reguardless of rating.
it's because of that, most Anime that was brought over, was censored for content, and images. Any and all remotely Religious symbolism was removed from Yu Gi Oh. any conversation about bust sizes were removed from Sailor Moon. (and Sailor Uranus and Neptune suddenly became 'Cousins') and bikinis were added on to bath scenes in Tenchi Muyo, and most Americans equate Japanese Anime with only the Hentai Stuff.
On a technical term, Cartoons and Anime are similar because they are both Animated. But in the mental imagry in Americans, they are as different as Nascar and WWE Wrestling.

he is among the greatest. others would be, the hillbilly bears, that blue dog... huckleberry something..., basically everyone that used to be on cartoon network about 10 years ago, notably the flintstones, jetsons, smurfs and snorks. rocky and bullwinkle was awesome. original rugrats was good. doug was awesome. angry beavers, ren and stimpy, ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE.

Are you saying the entire nation of Japan consists of whiney fanboys and fangirls. If I ever go there, I'll let them know you said that about them.
Not this again. I though we cleared it up for you a while back. Anime is Japanese for cartoon. Just the other day I asked some of my students what their favorite anime was. Answers included both Japanese and non-Japanese.
Isn't differentiating cartoons and anime like differentiating movies and Hollywood films?
Exactly so.
And JuNii, the origins of Anime are disputed, but are generally considered to have come from the English "animation", not Japanimation
anime Look up anime at Dictionary.com
c.1985, Japanese for "animation," a term that seems to have arisen in the 1970s, apparently based on the Eng. word. Manga (q.v.) is Japanese for "comic book, graphic novel," but anime largely are based on manga and until 1970s, anime were known as manga eiga or "TV manga." The two terms are somewhat confused in Eng.

Some claim it's rooted in the French.
