Actually, I hope he does it. Democrats are leading the polls (I realize these are both premature and preliminary,) almost across the board.

If not by the 2006 election, then by the 2008 election, the Democrats may gain Congress and the Republicans will have no ability to filibuster.

We need to go back to the old filibuster.

I hate the new one.

The old one was so much cooler. YOU ACTUALLY HAD TO KEEP TALKING. With the new rules, filibusters are bull shit! Congress adjorns for the day, and the filibuster starts the next day. It's complete stupidity. That's not a filibuster, that's just retardation.

I saw MR. Smith Goes to Washington the other day, and it made me reaffirm my faith in the Filibuster.

He knew how to do it right!

What happened to Strom Thurmonds 36 Hour Fillibuster

Read from the goddamn DC Phone book

Now thats a classic one(btw i neither condone nor support the previous positions of Thurmond)

But he sure knew how to do it.

Was that to stop a Supreme court appointee?

And I hope they do it too. Filibusters don't belong in the supreme court process.

If you are against the appointee:
Talk about it.
Vote against him/her.

But stop a vote from ever happening. That's just wrong.

No, it was for a bill that would have put a dam where he wanted a boys camp.

Good movie, actually. Go rent it.

I will so laugh if Bill Frist doesn't get re-elected in his state because of this!

Being a partisan hack will bite him in the ass!

Well, seeing as how it's only 2005 ... !

"Democrats have threatened to retaliate with a fight that could snarl Senate business for months." - from the article you cite. Democrats have traditionally used the filibuster more often than Republicans. Together with the threat to "snarl Senate business for months," this earns them the title "Most Obstructionist Party."

I suggest the Republicans go ahead and let them filibuster for however long they can stand on their feet.

It's American Politics.

I could count the number of congressmen that are NOT partisan hacks on one hand.

Not really. It stops the majority from totally ignoring the wishes of the minority. Makes for a more inclusive process.

It's so hard to be unpartisan with only two parties. It's all so black-and-white.

Bill Frist is bluffing. He can't change the rules knowing full well the democrats are taking over the next election leaving only the President or only the President and his religous right court nominee. If Bill Frist kills the Fillabuster he kills any chance of waging war against the democrats after 2006.

If I was going to change rules, I would change the filibuster to be the old way, where you had to keep people in the room talking their asses off, while their colleagues slept on mattresses in the hallway waiting their turn.

They're blowhards - let them talk if they like. But don't give them the "easy way out" and let them filibuster without having to go through an actual effort.

The Democrats aren't going to sweep in to power in 2006, because people don't like them much more than the Republicans. They don't offer anything but stonewalling and complaints, and their economic policy is regressive and protectionist. Until they start offering a free trade, fiscally responsible (both in spending and tax cuts) and forward looking agenda like Clinton did, they aren't going to gain anything.

Your talking points are contradicted, even by a Republican polling company.

You are fundamentally wrong because of the fact the average voter only knows two things: jack and shit. Jack already left.

Good point; I want a balanced Congress, but I want one that isn't going to fuck up the progress we've made because it gets them votes, and the Democrats I see aren't offering that economic vision.

I might add that I feel the same way about most Republicans, especially the ones who whined CNOOC out of buying Unocal and gave Conoco-Phillips an even bigger "monopoly".

I assume Frist is banking on the GOP never losing control of Congress, and there never being another Democratic president? He might want the fillibuster back if he's wrong about that.
