Aak, apparely I'm out of date. The word of the year for 2005 is su doku, whatever that means, while podcasting was for 2004.

Bah! The real Oxford English Dictionary was there first:

The New Oxford American is following the lead of the Oxford Dictionary of English, which added the podcast and other tech terms last summer.

I'm still not quite sure what a podcast is

Is it like a regularly updated broadcast, like an audio blog or something. I know the BBC is trialing podcasting for some of it's more popular radio shows. I think they give a weekly summary of all the best bits of a certain show.

Chris Moyles <3 There's nothing like waking up to a grumpy git on the radio at 7 in the morning.

... The word of the year for 2005 is su doku, whatever that means, ...

a sudoku is a kind of puzzle that originated in japan and took over the world last year. i tell you, it's crazy, it's been *the* thing in germany. you can't escape it. it knows where you live, and it'll get you.
seriously know, it's a logic thing having to do with filling in numbers in a square grid, methinks you call it "number placing" or something in the US.
it's okay, i guess, but i still stick to my crosswords and logicals.

I'm still not quite sure what a podcast is :confused.basically, its a radio prodram that you can download onto your computer (and subsequently you mp3-playing device). It can be music, talking, or whatever. essentailly, downloadable archived shows.
