That of course depends on the type of diabetes. Type 1, sure.
With type 2, having to resort to insulin is a failure of last resort, IMHO. Diet and perhaps an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor is what I'd push for. Failing those, as many do, I'd go over to a biguanide (metformin) and/or a glitazone, with the sulfanylureas being not so much favourites of mine (even though there are those without the sulfanylurea moiety, like repaglinide, that aren't as bad at all).
