Australia has taken control of the third one dayer in Christchurch setting the Black Caps the daunting task of 332 to win.
Earlier in the day, Vettori chose to bowl which brought instant results with the early dismissal of Adam Gilchrist for a duck and Simon Katich for two runs.
Gilchrist was caught leg between wicket from a Kyle Mills delivery while Katich was caught by Scott Styris from a Chris Martin ball.
The Black Caps had a chance to add the crucial wicket of Australian captian Ricky Ponting in the seventh over but he was dropped by Brendon McCullum.
Ponting soon settled into his rhythm building a good partnership with Brad Hodge to post 85 runs after 15 overs.
The pair took on the Kiwi bowlers hitting several fours all over the park before Ponting was out for an lbw by Vettori for 75 runs.
This brought Wednesday's batting hero Andrew Symonds to the crease but he was quickly dealt with by Vettori two balls later.
Hodge went on to make 59 before he was caught by Mills, his second of three for the day.
Michael Hussey kept the Aussies on the front foot though, with some brilliant batting particularly in the final overs hitting no fewer than five sixes.
At one stage he had added 40 runs to his total from just 11 balls. Hussey ended the innings with an impressive 88 runs.
However, it wasn't such a good start for debutant Cameron White who was caught out for a duck - Mills' third from a Chris Martin delivery.
It looked as if the Black Caps had weathered most of the Australian storm with Martin dismissing Michael Clarke the ball before White but they had not counted on Hussey being on fire.
Australia ended their innings on 331 for seven, making it tough for the Black Caps to salvage some pride.

10/12/2005ReutersScott Styris stroked his way to his third one-day century to lead New Zealand to the highest successful run chase in limited overs history in a two-wicket victory over Australia in Christchurch on Saturday.
Chasing Australia's daunting 331 for seven after Mike Hussey smashed 88 not out off 56 balls in the closing overs of their innings, Styris anchored New Zealand's successful chase of 332 for eight in 49 overs with 101 off 96 balls.
The previous highest successful run chase was the 330 for seven Australia scored against South Africa at Port Elizabeth in April 2002.
Pakistan has the highest second-innings record of 344 for eight, though they lost the match to India by five runs.

He got Pineitis from siting on the bench during the NZ fielding session....
I would also like to point out NZ was denied 2 runs at Wellington when the Umpire and 3rd Umpire deemed the ball was not in contact with the fieldier who 'was' touching the boundary rope.
So New Zealand actualyl won the series 2-1*Shifty eyes*

Fuck good The Evening (The Dominon) Post had a list of the 10 most Historical ODI's between New Zealand an Oz and it was a pretty decent list with that Wellington game getting in ther but surprisingly for me the Lance Cairns 6 6's in 13 balls match where we got slapped made it at 3 or 4.....
Highest score ever chased succesfully!
That Vettori Six was unbelievable!
Cannot think of a name

England 327/4 (50 ov)
Pakistan 224/4 (36.1 ov) Pakistan require another 104 runs with 6 wickets and 13.5 overs remaining
Pakistan have a chance to become the new 3rd on that same list, on the same day
Oh and Tendulkar just picked up an all time record 35th test century. What a day for cricket. 'Todays Yesterdays' on cricinfo will be a good read this time next year :)

Not anymore. Pakistan 285 all out. England win by 42 runs. Other than that, I don't want to discuss the tour.
Oh, and well done NZ. What's important in cricket is that Australia loses.

it's only important because the Aussies have been so dominant for so long.
I love it when the Aussies win but it is more satisfying when it is a tight game.
Looking forward to my annual trek to Adelaide oval on Australia day, we've got Sri Lanka this year. fingers crossed for a tight game........see how much grog we can smuggle in in our false bottomed eskis and hollowed out loaves of bread;)

Actually, it's not because of australia's recent dominance, it's because I am and England supporter. So, naturally, I've always felt that australia should lose.

Fair enough.......I guess I feel the same about England except, until about a year or two I ago, I found myself feeling sorry for them and hoping they would win a game or two :D

Oh, there have been some dark days, I won't deny that.
Fortunately, under my system*, games played in the sub-continent don't count. So I am still happy at the moment.
*hopefully the ICC will adopt this rule in the near future.

Well it was certainly a great chase and heaps of runs on the board in one game.
But considering every person bowl a ball apart from Vettori was shocking took a bit away from the game. Was dominated by batting.
Didn't see any of it so can't comment, but heard Hussey on the radio, that was amazing :D Nice average.
