Is Oklahoma! OK?

I've been keeping my ears open for news about my school's next musical, but the only rumour I have heard is Oklahoma! I've been researching it, but I can't find the information I need: what is the vocal range of Laurey? And does she need to be a good dancer? I'm an operatic soprano with limited dancing ability, and I would very much like this to be "my" musical (director picks musicals based on who he wants to be in lead roles). Any information you can give me would be wonderful.*

*Personally, I want to do Disney's Beauty and the Beast, but I'm not the one in charge.

I lived near Tahlequah, Ok for about a year and a half.

I saw no fringe on top, nor any barn dancing. I think the musical is probably not an accurate representation of Oklahoma life in general.

That wasn't the question!

Well I happen to be a musicals buff. I don't know Laurey's EXACT vocal range, but I know it's a soprano part. And yes, she needs to be able to dance. I hope this helps. :)

A little. I'm doomed with the dance! Like, I really have no talent. But I'm the only operatic singer that the director ever compliments. Most of the rest are sort of belty, or pop-ish. Although a few of them can do sort mild opera if they try.

Ugh. Pop. *shudder* I do mostly choral singing, but I've been classically trained so most pop singers make my ears bleed. I'm trying to remember Laurey's exact range. I'm an alto, and I remember it being a bit too high for me when my school did Oklahoma.

Finally someone who agrees with me! Everyone (except me) believes that this year's lead is amazing. I think she is pretty bad, although she has good pitch. But her voice is nasal, pop-ish, and even a little belty. It kind of reminds me of someone who would place well on American Idol.

Oh Lord. Not American Idol. That sounds pretty much like my high school drama/choral department too. Except that most of our singers also had no ability to project so if you were sitting more than two rows back all you could hear was the orchestra.
