A man is made of cells. These cells clump together to form tissues, and then these tissues form organs. The organs work in concert together to form the body, and then the body is what is seen as the man.

This question is getting at something. I think most people have a prototype of a "man". And not just a male, or a guy, or a man, but a "man". There are a lot of boys out there, and very few "men". All the single ladies out there can vouch for this, I'm sure.

How should a person respond when he is asked, "As a human being, what is essential in terms of purpose and discipline?" First, let us say, "It is to become of the mind that is right now pure and lacking complications." People in general all seem to be dejected. When one has a pure and uncomplicated mind, his expression will be lively. When one is attending to matters, there is one thing that comes forth from his heart. That is, in terms of one's lord, loyalty; in terms of one's parents, filial piety; in martial affairs, bravery ; and apart from that, something that can be used by all the world.
This is very difficult to discover. Once discovered, it is again difficult to keep in constant effect. There is nothing outside the thought of the immediate moment.

Am I the only one who thought of Lebowski when I read the thread title.. someone tell me I'm not.. :(

Classic scene though..

---------

BRANDT
We've had some terrible news. Mr.
Lebowski is in seclusion in the West
Wing.

DUDE
Huh.

Brandt throws open a pair of heavy double doors. The music
washes over us as we enter a great study where Jeffrey
Lebowski, a blanket thrown over his knees, stares hauntedly
into a fire, listening to Lohengrin.

BRANDT ANNOUNCES, AMBIGUOUSLY:

BRANDT
Mr. Lebowski.

Jeffrey Lebowski waves the Dude in without looking around.

LEBOWSKI
It's funny. I can look back on a
life of achievement, on challenges
met, competitors bested, obstacles
overcome. I've accomplished more
than most men, and without the use
of my legs. What. . . What makes a
man, Mr. Lebowski?

DUDE
Dude.

LEBOWSKI
Huh?

DUDE
I don't know, sir.

LEBOWSKI
Is it. . . is it, being prepared to
do the right thing? Whatever the
price? Isn't that what makes a man?

DUDE
Sure. That and a pair of testicles.

Lebowski turns away from the Dude with a haunted stare, lost
in thought.

LEBOWSKI
You're joking. But perhaps you're
right.

The Dude thumps at his chest pocket.

DUDE
Mind if I smoke a jay?

LEBOWSKI
Bunny.

He turns back around and the firelight shows teartracks on
his cheeks.

DUDE
'Scuse me?

LEBOWSKI
Bunny Lebowski. . . She is the light
of my life. Are you surprised at my
tears, sir?

DUDE
Fuckin' A.

LEBOWSKI
Strong men also cry. . . Strong men
also cry.

I never get tired of that.. pathetic, I know.. :(

First, in order to answer this heated question we must ask ourselves "What is a man? How do we define a man? Are men defined differently in other cultures? If so, is our perception of a man correct? Should a man be defined by physical characteristics such as presence of a Y chromosome and that little appendage hanging from his crotch, or by the inherent psychological motives hardwired into our brain? Are these motives programmed, or are they genetic? Is the idea of a man a result of the sociological interaction between male and female? Should females be defined as men or men as females? What is the moralistic motives for giving such a definition to a man, and why do we accept these? Is it not sexist to exclude women from being men? Is this not denial of equal opportunity based on flimsy premises that modern science has defined through rigorous testing and common sense? Is there a 'man' inside all of us? Can we become men?"

Herein lies the answer.

Using the same book, a young male (ages 13-20) cannot become a man unless he has an older (ages 35-50) lover. A male lover, to boot. Perhaps Yamamoto, a bitter, old samurai isn't the person we should be quoting on this.

"The Lost Kingdom"

There are those who would have you believe power is what makes a man
Those who would have you believe wealth defines our person
To watch over a kingdom of our own making
Being the true sign of success or failure in ones life

I say we may all build our own kingdom
This kingdom needs not power or servants
It needs not wealth and extravagant things
This kingdom needs only love

Love being the bearer of all things good
Love bringing us our dreams, our goals
Delivering to us all the things wealth and power cannot
Love, being the vessel by which we find our kingdoms queen

A friend wrote to me once
She spoke to me, told me that heartbreak was a temporary thing
That it would be worth the risk, for the reward of an undeniable love
An unequivocal love.

And she was right, for I knew precisely of what she spoke
I knew the search for my kingdom had found fruit
I knew there would be no bounds to the happiness in my life from that day forward
But alas it seems I was mistaken

For only now am I realizing, that I have lost my queen

That's great.

However, the poll never clearly defined man as biological, or in the broader sense meaning being human. In the latter case, a man may not even have to be of the human species, but only act with the two-faced human nature of respect and dignity versus the unpredictable "bad" side.

Now You're A Man - DVDA

Hey

What makes a man?
Is it the power in his hands?
Is it his quest for glory?
Give it all you've got,
to fight to the top
So we can know your story

Now you're a man

A man, man man
Now you're a man

A manny manny man
A man man man

You are now a man
You're a man
Now you're a man

Live it, Live it

What make a man?
Is it the woman in his arms?
Just cause she has big titties?
Or is it the way he fights every day?
....No, it's probably the titties

Now you're a man

A man, man man
Now you're a man-man

Man-man man-man man

Me and my brother were talking to each other
'Bout what makes a man a man
Was it brain or brawn, or the month you were born
We just couldn't understand

Our old man didn't like our appearance
He said that only women wear long hair

So me and my brother borrowed money from Mother
We knew what we had to do
We went downstairs, past the barber and gymnasium
And got our arms tattooed

Welcome to my life, tattoo
I'm a man now, thanks to you
I expect I'll regret you
But the skin graft man won't get you
You'l be there when I die
Tattoo

My dad beat me 'cause mine said "Mother"
But my mother naturally liked it and beat my brother
'Cause his tattoo was of a lady in the nude
And she thought that was extremely rude

Welcome to my life, tattoo
We've a long time together, me and you
I expect I'll regret you
But the skin graft man won't get you
You'll be there when I die
Tattoo

Now I'm older, I'm tattooed all over
My wife is tattooed too
A rooty-toot-toot, rooty-tooty-toot-toot
Rooty-toot-toot tattoo too
To you

No, no, not the presence of the appendage... the size. Oh, and after that has been judged worthy you'll also be judged on how skilled you are with it's use. So practice often.

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

You're misinterpreting his view on homosexuality. He isn't saying that all men should have an older male lover, though in the Edo Period, homosexuality was considered a greater pursuit than heterosexuality. That was because it was thought that one should completely devote one's life to his master. Also, don't forget i nthe old days 13 wasn't a surprising age for people to get married. Yamamoto was hardly bitter, he had taken the tonsure of a Buddhist monk and livd in a hermitage.

Since there's so many songs floating about...

Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run

If, "Manners maketh man" as someone said
Then he's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say
