this just goes to prove that british accents don't work in voiceovers. ;)
they also don't work in movies, songs, or in fact anywhere... the american accent is intrinsically cooler imo.

ignore the film i was doing it for (got the idea from a canadian stand-up comic who used the patriot in a sketch about 'the voiceover man', so i just said that cos i'm too tired to think up my own...)

thoughts?
(ps: whatddya think of my 'voiceover man' imitation? ;))

Yeah, it definetely works better in that scenario. However if I had the choice I'd adopt a Liverpoolian accent like that *snaps fingers once to represent speed* Why? Because everything is funnier when one talks like that.

Well, in fairness to your accent, it's hard to buy that a british guy would be on the side of the American Revolutionist. Our accent is cool at sounding like we want something to blow up really soon. Your guys' accent is good for sounding smarter than the person your talking to, or a good 'voice of authority'. "It has to be right, dear. He had a British accent."

And only five guys have the 'In a world' voice, the rest of us don't sound that cool.

British English; but not "Queens English" (By which I assume you mean Recieved Pronounciation). I much prefer a mildly RP accent with Esturine admixture. If you can get past the cultural prejudices against Esturine English, you can hear how the glottal stops and pure vowels make it sound so beautiful and minimalist. It's a big improvement on pure RP.

"Limey" referred to the old traditional citrus fruit of choice for the British Navy, which would, mostly,be pulped and mixed with the crew's daily rations of Rum. This was to ward off scurvy, and to make the Rum last longer. All the Naval Powers used citrus in this way, but the Brits were widely known for choosing to stock limes more often than not.

So, no, really, calling a Brit a "limey" is pret-ty tame stuff and shouldn't rate three red angry emoticons as a response. Like I said, I could've been really nasty and called them something far, far worse.

Well, I might sound a little like that.

I recorded myself saying the "Stella" bit on Fass's voice thread, but my shitty microphone didn't even reproduce my voice properly.

I'll try to put my voice in words... It's like the accent we're talking about, but with pristine enunciation. Though when I get to talking fast and somewhat loudly, I lose the pristine enunciation and sound really "rough". During this period of roughness, the letter "t" changes pronunciation as follows. If "t" is at the beginning of a word, it almost sounds like "d". If it's anywhere else, it's almost "th".

And what is that? There is no such thing as the "Britsh Rural Accent". Farmers from Yorkshire sound completely different to those in the West Country.

I happen to think the Brit accent is enough to make any chick drop her panties, well over here in the US anyway. I know when my Darling came over here for a visit whenever he said anything to anyone in a store or whatnot it made jaws drop and knees tremble (if they were female). I got a kick out of it actually.... Now to see if it works in reverse over there when I go to London this Summer :P

ment of said that certian local dialects share similar wording to others , tis shame that many dont speak in rural accent I know they dont all sound the same I live in a county where in some places even the village next door doesnt speak with the same dialect words just saying i prefer the local dialect as it sometimes easier to understand or to confuse people

clicky (http://www.hlj.me.uk/thepatriot.mp3)

this just goes to prove that british accents don't work in voiceovers. ;)
they also don't work in movies, songs, or in fact anywhere... the american accent is intrinsically cooler imo.

ignore the film i was doing it for (got the idea from a canadian stand-up comic who used the patriot in a sketch about 'the voiceover man', so i just said that cos i'm too tired to think up my own...)

thoughts?
(ps: whatddya think of my 'voiceover man' imitation? ;))

(poll coming)

Well if he is, the trailer voice+British accent attempt didn't sound at all British, just do it NORMALLY without the trailer voice :)

The accent's nation of origin doesn't make it cool. The person using it does. Joe Pesci's got a cool accent, so does Ali G. Fran Drescher's got a horrible accent, so does Posh Beckham (though not nearly as bad as Drescher's.) In fact Posh's accent isn't all that annoying but it's not that great either. Maybe I'm just wrong.

No, you're not :) I wholeheartedly agree! (Especially about Posh! As long as you've still got her in the same category as Fran! :p)

Take note:

HE IS BRITISH.

It's still an awful accent.

If I wasn't in a library right now, I'd record a comparison between my own (fairly generic English, being comprised of bits of the North, South-East and West) accent, and a fairly put-on Extremely Formal variant (which is close to what I use when talking to people with very thick other accents - it helps me be understood) doing the same piece. But I can't, so I won't.

However, I'll agree with what someone else pointed out - there was effort in the US accent. The UK one sounded like it was thrown together for the explicit purpose of looking bad. I wonder why.

For the Movie Trailer Guy, I think so.. I wasn't believing the English accent though.. I'd work on that.. of course, the Movie Trailer Guy's not the best sample to gauge accent proficiency.. :p

The poll says "Any" american accent and the clip uses a general american accent with correct pronunciation. You can't lump extreme southern and New York accents with the one in the clip. Some people in the south don't even use sentences anymore it's just one long word (somehow with the same tone of voice for males and females :) ).

Only certain British accents. And authority seems to have a strange gentrifying effect on British accents. My aunt and most of her daughters sound like the title character in Educating Rita. Their eldest sister was always the one taking care of them and sounds quite a bit more sophisticated. So they took to calling her Mrs. Bucket. (from Keeping Up Appearances, not Willy Wonka).
