Thousands of people gathered Tuesday in Dongzhou, in southern Guangdong province, to protest the amount of money offered by the government as compensation for land taken to construct a wind power plant.

Police fired into the crowd, killing as many as 10 people, mostly men, and wounding up to 20, villagers reached by telephone said Friday. They said many people are missing.taken from CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/12/09/china.protest.ap/)

Not cool.

But just to clear something up - they weren't protesting the wind power installation, they were protesting that the government took their land to build it.
"The government did not give us proper compensation for using our land to build the development zone and plants. Now they come and shoot us. I don't know what to say."

But who do you think is behind this? It is Big Wind, the companies, who only think of their profits in total contempt of human rights.

Infrastructure projects like this are always first and foremost the Chinese government's domain. They probably have a few companies that will build the things for them, but I doubt they'd have enough leverage to make the Chinese government do anything.

It's the same deal as with that huge dam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Gorges_Dam) they're building (like the Hoover Dam, just something like double the size). They decided to do this in the name of progress, and you better get outta the way.

China is hardly a place friendly to civil rights so it is not such a shocker.
