Pretty sure NIN formed at the end of the 80's.

A lot of the great bands from the 90's formed in the 80's.

Blues Traveler, for instance, formed in the very early 80's as an NY club circuit jam band, they just didn't get REALLY big until the release of Four in the middle 90's.

i find blink the most tolerable of those listed on the poll.

the problem with the 90's is that, although there was lots of great music, the great majority were 1-hit wonders or something like that. however, matchbox 20 should definately be added to the poll.

We could always just gently mock the thread by suggesting that Status Quo were the band of the 90s, along with also being the band of the 80s, the band of the 70s, the band of the 60s and also the band of '00s, but that would be cruel.

Although I agree GNR kicked ass, they would not have been on the same level had they stayed together. In an interview right after the split, Slash said that Axl's ideas for the band sucked and would have alienated their fans, and told Axl to give him a call if he ever wanted to "rock" again.

I find no one on the poll worthy of my vote. And it depends on what you specifically mean; most good bands don't last within the confines of a decade- GNR started in 88, but the best stuff came out in the early 90's. Where would you put Metallica? IMHO their best stuff was in the 80's, but they became vastly more popular in the 90's-00's.

Slash wanted to turn the band into a hairband that had repetitive songs.

The reason Axl wanted to change things up for the Illusions is simply that if they never escaped AfD (which they DIDN'T with Lies) their music, no matter how good it was, would always be overshadowed by their first release.

It's just sad that Axl gets all the blame for it.

7 albums, one of which was shit, well respected globally, plenty of awards, one of the best guitarists ever, several huge albums, diverse styles, gorrillaz, very vocal against recent events. seems that blur are quite similar to greenday doesnt it?:P

the thing is, greenday are a pop band. blur are not (except for the period in the mid nineties when they were, but we wont mention that).

Aerosmith
Bon Jovi
Metallica

Alice In Chains

the problem is not that you don't get to hear them. it's more that you don't make the effort to hear them.
it's pretty easy and cheap to get songs recorded, mixed and burnt onto cd's. distribution is problematic but not impossible, particularly thanks to the internet. loads of bands do the independent thing, put out their own records, fanzines, tours.
anyway shit's shit whether you're on a major label making millions or on an indie selling 5000 records. it's as much a mistake to confuse sales with quality as it is to confuse lack of sales with quality.

I don't know if it counts, but the second coming of Johnny Cash in the 90's was pretty damn good. Aside from that, you can't knock bands like RATM, Pearl Jam (well, okay, you can sort of rip Pearl Jam, but more than anything else because they spawned the Creed clone), and Jane's Addiction. I'm not quite on the same wavelength as everyone else about Nirvana, but nevertheless they did have some very good albums, and the same is true of groups like Smashing Pumpkins and Alice in Chains.

Bottom line: I don't know if I could say who was the best overall band of the 90's, because that's a difficult thing to pin down and define (Santana, for instance, had some really good albums in the 90's, but does he count if he started playing in the 60's?), but on the whole, the music from the 90's was way better quality than in the 80's; after all, at least in the 90's the music industry was smart enough to realize that Metallica for all its faults is still hella better than Jethro Tull.

Ah, a convincing argument if ever I saw one.

The spice girls always were and always will be at best of moderate talent, who garnered more popularity through their "girl power" stance, media circus and sex appeal than respect for their musical ability or message.

Maddona does not "pwn". She's better than the Spice Girls, though. Oh, and why would she be on the best bands of the 90s anyway?

I don't dispute that. The fact remains, however, that in the 90's you could hear pretty decent bands just about anywhere in the country on a major station. In the 80's, all you could hear on the radio was Meatloaf and Huey Lewis and the News. There's a big difference right there.
