I need travel advice for Cuba.
Alright, I was going through some pictures of various resorts in Varadero, and I finally have to admit that I really don't want to be surrounded by gringos the whole time. For those of you who don't know, my husband and I are going in January, and so far, we were content to just hang out at the resort, because we just need a break somewhere hot. But I can't do it! I've always traveled light, backpacked, and stayed in people's homes, but this time I figured I just wanted to be pampered. But that would really only work if I were surrounded by hot latinos and latinas, and that's not going to be the case at the resort.
So I want to get into Cuba...and still be able to relax...no backpacking or adventure travel this time. Just a nice, non-resort hotel somewhere central so I can tour a bit, scream my head off having sex and not scare anyone, and NOT be surrounded by pasty white people. Not that I have anything against pasty white people. Just saying.

Sorry, I don't want to break any of your laws, and be branded a smuggler!

Man...doesn't it drive you guys nuts that you can't go there? It blows my mind...hell, your government wouldn't prevent you from going to Saudi Arabia, North Korea, or anywhere else...but Cuba? Right next door? Sheesh.

Oh I can go there ... same way they come here .... but I bet ya I wouldn't be allowed to come back.
Though the cigars + knowing *exactly* where the buck stops + the music = may be worth it.

Have a great time with your honeybuns.
You mean the sex, the eating, the sex, the sleeping, the sex, the eating, the sex, the laying by the pool, the sex....as opposed to wasting time touring?
Yeah. I can't decide...
Alright, I was going through some pictures of various resorts in Varadero[snip snip]
i *know* from the other thread that this one is not supposed to be a political holiday or anything :), but still.varadero, now, come on. the average cuban folks who don't happen to work in one of the resorts aren't even allow to set foot in there. you can't go much more wrong. i see how you want to get inot a resort-ish kinda thing and not he adventurous (sp?) stay-at-folks'-home tour as somebody suggested, but try going someplace where cubans are allowed to go too. or you can as well go..someplace else. would be a waste, really, to got o cuba then.

It's cheap. The cheapest hot place we can get to. That's more why we chose it than anything...we DO want to tour Cuba at some point...but not this time. I've been trying to find info on even cheaper accomodations (that are as nice), but the package deals are hard to beat. $1400 Canadian for 14 days? All meals included? Yeah.

I just looked it up ... for an American to go to Cuba, here are the restrictions:
http://www.usacubatravel.com/restriction.htm
Most amazing: Not allowed to spend more than $183 per day.
God I hate my country sometimes.
Didn't stay in any hotels while I was there, so I can't really help you on that part... But if you ever want to stay with a Cuban family, nothing could be easier. They have a green sign on their door saying they're licenced to accomodate tourists. Just look around and you'll find some easily. Heck, when I took a coach from Havana to Trinidad, Cubans crowded the coach as it arrived, all offering accomodation to the tourists getting off... You can look around several to compare prices and accomodation conditions before deciding anything.

Fly to another country, fly to Cuba, and raft back. They have to accept you - it's policy.
