Is this going to have a poll?

Bizarrely, I read that right-wing intellectual rag The Telegraph. That always surprises people who are just starting to know me.

The Independent, although I read the Guardian and the Metro frequently too. I'm finding that, IMHO the Independent is not as good as it once was, where as the Guardian is getting better. Oh, and the TES (Times Educational Supplement) is pretty much essential reading for my future job (primary teacher).

Telegraph and the Scotsman.

Scotsman's gone downhill. It used to be a good centrist paper, but it's gone to the right these days... I need balance!

Ooh, also newsweek

I used to be a press analyst and was paid to read all of them each morning.

The simple reality is that the national papers are dying, but paper reading is not. The largest percentage of papers bought everyday are inocious little regionals that are not really sources of news, but rather local advertising papers.

The major broad sheets (except the FinTimes) are slowly dying because they are so much slower than the internet and TV in providing news, and they must resort to "magazine" style in order to survive. Hence their online versions tend to provide free access to the news sections but requiren subscriptions to their comment sections.

The red tops (Mirror, Sun, News of the world) rely on re-hashing popular culture and news"lite" to sell copies, but they are increasingly dependant on analysing reality TV, which I don't think has much life let in it because of the threat of lawsuits.

The Express and Daily Mail (and to some degree the Mirror) are sort of half way between the two major groups and fluctuate.

The only broadsheet that has stable growth (mild swealling would be a more accurate term) is the Financial Times because it caters for a specific and small part of society and has some strong cache in that social group.

Personally I would rather read the International Herald and Tribune, but that is because it is quite specific hard news newspaper that lacks most of the stuffing that other papers have.

I read the (Glasgow) Herald, the Extra (glasgow south and East renfrewshire edt, its a local free paper, occasionally has some actual news in it) and on occassion the Daily records, Sun or Metro depending on what is lieing around the office.

The Saturday Herald gets fought over in our house but there are generally enough bits for everyone.

Belfast Telegraph, Guardian occassionally, and the Mirror in work.

The Daily Express. Because my parents buy it. Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert and Beachcomber are good.

But the rest of the paper: The "news" stories seem to have little, if any, basis in fact, and they're always taken way beyond any logical extreme (eg. "Possible inch of snow in some places tomorrow" becomes "BRITAIN TO BE BROUGHT CRASHING TO HALT IN SIBERIAN BLIZZARD!"). The opinion pieces are narrow-minded, bigoted and hateful. Do people really think like that?

I read several papers including the Times, Gaurdian, The Daily Mail The Sun, The News of the World, The People, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Mail as well as the local papers such as the Tamworth Herald.

I do a media course so its important to know who, what and where.

"Possible inch of snow in some places tomorrow" becomes "BRITAIN TO BE BROUGHT CRASHING TO HALT IN SIBERIAN BLIZZARD!"

Its all about what sells, which would you buy between:

a) Plane shot down in Iraq

b) Plane Crashes in Iraq

Unfortunately the newspapers tend to sell fear and depression rather than happy stuff.

The Times and Private Eye.

The former I read whenever I can - although that's difficult often because my mother hates the Times and always buys the Mail or sometimes the Mirror (and occasionally something else if there's some promotional offer in it) and my dad reads the Sun and Star

The latter I read during lunchtimes at my school. /me loves it :)

The Northeren Echo, and Yorkshire post.

I culdnt read any of the Mail Express Metro, without the urge to kill a journo, maybe because I am not a member of te conservative middle classes and live in Richmond, surrey (I live In Richmond N Yorks)

and strangely enough given my views I used to read the torygraph,
and when they were available Socialist worker, Militant, The morning star (still available by subscription, I might start up again)

and strangely enough given my views I used to read the torygraphI still pick up the Torygraph from time to time in shops, just to have a laugh at its contents. Even though it's always been biased, at least it actually used to have some journalism in it. Nowadays, aside from its size, it's essentially a tabloid.

Occasionally, I find that the supplements that come with the Sunday edition have some interesting stuff, but generally the paper is a load of shit.

The Guardian. For the corrections and clarifications colums, plus the ongoing debate about 35mm film canisters in the lettes page.
Doesn't surprise me that it's the most popular newspaper among NSers.

All the broadsheets are 20p in our union. Ok, the Grauniad's not a broadsheet anymore...nor's the Indie, or the Times, but hey, you know what I mean.
