One of my friends is the Labour Party Society Events Officer and is chummy with the University student union executive. Soooo, I was playing devils advocate and suggesting that the student union (guild) was bloated and that further more the National Union of Students was buerucratic morass and that the guild should cease its automatic sign up for all students who join the university. Basically he disagreed with me (emphatically), and listed what the NUS has succeeded in doing, and that moreover it was a good thing that the guild undemocratically automatically signed up students to the NUS with funds alloacted to the guild which was supposed to be democratic in the funds were allocated. In the end he made a comparison with the NUS dues and taxes and with the NUS and the NHS. At which point I dropped the debate because I was getting bored and was late.
My points were basically that it the NUS wastes a lot of money with national conferences and such; a lot of what the NUS does could be done by concensus between university unions; a university student union could also easily negotiate discounts for students and that's mainly for the benefit of wanabee politicians who are desparate to weild some sort of power.
