By 'the old metal' do you mean Power Metal? Or is Speed Metal the same as Power Metal? I love metal, but I can't really get that into it 'cause most metalheads are such geeks about nomenclature and putting things in silly subdivisions of genres. I mean, Troll Metal ffs? What the hell? Noisecore, Grindcore, Sludgecore (wtf?), Metalcore (double wtf?) ... some of the genres don't make sense to me. I listen to Maiden, Sabbath, Motorhead, King Diamond, Metallica (before they turned suck), etc. Some people have tried to argue with me that Maiden isn't even metal, that they're just hard rock. Those people are crazy.
I will argue that Hair Metal (Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Poison) is not "metal". Van Halen, awesome though they were, were not metal. Jump = pop song, not metal.

speed metal=/=power metal
Old metal is usually stuff like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc. At a guess.

No, all thrash is speed metal, but not all speed metal is thrash.
--> Judas Priest, Venom, Motorhead, Children of bodom all speed metal, none of them thrash.

In a very loose sense of the term, Speed Metal can be seen as Heavy Metal played much faster.

Thrash is the genre for me, although why I'm posting in this thread when there's almost an identical, older thread on the same page is beyond me. Unfortunately, I've only seen Metallica and Megadeth thrash-wise. I await any tours that Slayer, Testament or Anthrax may perform with greedy anticipation. :)

All those cores aren't technically metal. They are closer to hardcore. (hence the -core part) And metalcore is a mix between hardcore and metal also not fully metal.
The widely recognized "basic" subgenres are:
Traditional heavy metal
Death metal
Thrash metal
Speed metal
Doom metal
Power metal
Black metal
Folk/viking metal
Progressive metal
Orchestraic/symphonic metal
Gothic metal
Pure Metal
