English! Hurrah! But that's pretty much only because it's the only language I can actually speak, unless you count a disjointed knowledge of Spanish lol.

Incidentally isn't Australian the same as English (pretty much anyway)? Unless we're talking aboriginal Australian.

Oh and Maori is pretty cool too.

Yes there is! English :p :D ;)

Hehehe, kidding btw. But it is a pretty cool language. And very satisfying to cuss in - although I hear Swahili is very good for that too.

In practical terms English is best cos it has the most words, but Japanese sounds the coolest.

English. It's also demonstrably easier to learn; I became competent with the language before I can even remember, but, despite considerable effort since then, I've yet to become anything other than totally incompetent with any other language I've tried.

First off, Australian isn't a language. Second, you're simply asking what the best language is, without stating by what measure. I think the latin based languages and latin itself all sound lyrical in their usage, but in matters of efficiency, English is the most efficient language. It allows one to articulate a statement without using more words then neccesary and articulate it in a manner where it can't be easily misinterpereted. In the case of Mandarin and Cantonese, one statement, based on differences in inflection and intonation can have 3 different meanings. Not the most efficient way to have a language, especially when you're using their character system. The chinese keyboard has 4 seperate possible shifts for each key.

The best language is the one I'm working on making, of course. It is both beautiful and efficient, with few irregularities. I'm even working on a writing system for it based on concrete poetry.

Lóiààmiúkkise luò tuóóníllintai, èliinsusaai sèssutaisáái uón lékkisa làutníllintaisá, sáikika à kétlintaisá kótlintai uòòl
-- Lèt lànnáseppusai Siùláttunsai!

Do not be as the Lawyer-eel [hagfish] and avoid danger whilst exploiting others but confront it with courage and live honestly instead.
-- Thus praught Siulattunsai!

Kolììŋkisui ú tónákitaai, kólintaai!

Workers of the world, unite!

Of course, other than my language, Italian is probably the most beautiful of the ones on the list, though if you ask me, one of the Khoisan languages like Nàmá or !Xóõ would be a much better choice, as would Mohawk or Cheyenne.

No language is as precise and expressive in such a broad range of fields.

No language has such a complicated, rich history.

No language has a more arcane written system (though china may tie).

No other language has produced a work of scholarship on par with the OED.

ah... but what do you want it to be best for? Each language is deeply rooted in the culture it's spoken in, not to mention the fact that whatever your native language is, you're bound to like it to some extent because you can express yourself most accurately in your mother tongue.
... at least that's the case for most people.

I also find your choices a little ethnocentric... lots of indo-european choices, 'cept maybe for chinese.

scandanavian languages sound fun, and look pretty cool.

the polynesian languages are pretty good too, and fairly easy to learn. They all sprout out of the same root. As such, the words Hawai'i, Tahiti, and Samoa (the names of the major islands of each cluster as well as the cluster) all come from Havaiki (poor spelling) meaning "central land". Shows how much a language can evolve in isolation in a short time.
