I did this thread awhile back, but since then, many NSers have come and gone, and who knows, maybe even some of your political views have changed since then. For those who weren't here before, the rules are simple: name your favorite political figures (they can be statesmen, political activists, whatever) from each region listed (North America, etc.). And feel free to name as many as you want. And as always, no flaming. You can criticize someone's list if you want, but don't flame the person.

Europaland: I mostly agree to your list, but I couldn't honestly put Leon Blum in mine. Among others, I cannot forgive him his betrayal of Spanish Republicans. The clash between the PCF (communists) and the SFIO (social-democrats) about this subject was the cause of the fall of "front populaire" of 1936; the communists refused to betray their spanish bretheren, and created the International Brigads, while the social-democrats refused to even sell them the weapons they so dearly needed in their struggle against Franco). Else, nice list, more complete than mine.

North America
It is a toss-up between Thomas Jefferson (because of his strong public, if not private, commitment to liberty) and Teddy Roosevelt (because, in many ways, he was the embodiment of the pre-depression American, smart, strong, self reliant, reserved, skilled, and brutal when angered).
Western Europe
It might be going back awhile but, I'd have to go with Boadicea.
Eastern Europe
Maybe Marshal Tito for managing to hold Yugoslavia together despite the intense ethnic hatreds. If not Tito, than maybe Tepes, though it is hard to seperate fact from fiction about his reign these days. Still, the idea of turning away an army without meeting ever bothering to meet their main force...
Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa
Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar for challenging the caste system and rejecting the limitations of the calss he was born into. In my eyes, it takes more bravery to challenge society and all it's gods than it does to challenge a foreign invader.
Sub-Saharan Africa
Nelson Mandella, for the obvious reasons.

Leon Blum's lack of help for the Spanish Republicans is certainly totally unacceptable although if he had became involved it could have started a civil war in France which I understand is still no excuse for his actions. There are however a number of positive things about Blum such as the social reforms his government brought about which improved the lives of working people and his determination to rearm the country in order to prepare for the inevitable German attack.

Well, true, I don't say he did only bad things. But he wouldn't qualify for some I admire. And for the social advances, you have to remember that he conceded them only after a very successful general strike, he didn't do it spontanously (even if he accepted to do them, while many others, especially at that time, would have send the army to open fire against the strikers...).
So my opinion of Leon Blum is more mitigated. He did some very good things, but not always from his own initiative, and he did some unforgiveable (IMHO) things. I wouldn't say he's a bad man, but I wouldn't admire him either.
But well, the subject was not a discussion about Leon Blum, so I'll stop after this ;)
