The Smiths... Your opinion? Personally, I can't get enough.

Two types of Depressing Music:

A: I'm so depressed I want to kill myself. (A la The Smiths)

B: I'm so depressed I want to kill everyone else (A la... Glassjaw)

The Smiths are my neighbors. They're great. They let me use their pool sometimes.

Why is every band called "The <Whatevers>" nowadays? It's getting to be quite vexatious.

The ultimate, though, was The The (and the Smiths' Johnny Marr played with them for a while, too). :D

Actually, The Smiths are a band from the early eighties. This "The _______" trend reached its apex in the 90's, doncha think?

The Smiths were one of the most loathsome bands on the planet. Totally overrated with the biggest twat of a frontman in music history. I really wish Morrissey was dead. A heart attack behind the wheel of his car. Ploughs into Johnny Marr as he walks home.
(See also Sonic Youth, Pixies, REM, Pavement, Beatles, Nirvana)

Damn... ghosting sucks cuz I can't edit my own posts.

I should've added another dimension to this poll; sexuality. The Smiths are almost totally appreciated by those with dubious sexuality, from my experience. homo and hetero-only folks don't seem to get them. That would've made this poll more interesting.
Where's the UK'ers? Where's the talk of otherwise straight friends turning into little pop-fan girls at Morrissey shows? :p

Late 90's early..... em... noughties??? The Strokes, The Hives, The Frames, The Thrills, The Revs, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Dandy Warhols, The Cardigans, blah blah blah

A B-grade skiffle band with an egocentric miserabilist for a lead singer.

Well...I'm not sexually ambiguous, or British, and I think they're one of the greatest bands of the last three decades. Morrissey is certainly an acquired taste, but his lyrics are pure genius. Melancholy with a dark humour, the man is a legend. I, like Eichen, can not get enough!

"There Is a Light and It Never Goes Out" is one of the most inspirational songs ever written. period.

The Smiths are responsible for the whole "indie" kid scenester scene. Blame them for every band starting with The. They are responsible for every mascara wearing floppy haired emo kid who gets all gooey at the eyes and groin anytime they hear Morrisseys voice. They should have been Mark David Chapman-ed. Morrissey molests children. Johnny Marr sleeps with women then doesn't call them in the morning. Mike Joyce bums dogs for money. Andy Rourke steals from old people. Kill the kill them all. Now.

I didn't go through with a post because I didn't think anyone would "get it". That was a post concerning the fact that I think he's one of the best humorists to come along in music.
I consider it a "dark humor" band, not of any gothic nature. They've been typecast in the wrong department. I'd compae them to Chuck Palahniuk's lit...
Social comedy. And it's apt in a hillarious way, IMHO. :D

Mike Joyce bums dogs for money.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but Mike Joyce's main source of income is taking his ex-band members to court, and the dog-bumming is only a sideline.

Don't pretend like that has anything to do with the music. If so, all of "our" classic rock bands would "suck".
That's just trashy legalistic backtracking, dude.

Eh? Did I claim that this fact directly affected the music? Don't seem to have done. The matter at hand is the band, so why pull me up when I present factually accurate information? If you should be venting your spleen on anyone here then it should be The Jesus Lizard.

I also fail to see what in my post can be counted as 'backtracking', please explain.

Not so much 'offensivly' as 'incomprehensibly'.

Once I can actually follow your arguments then I might get riled by them.

"How soon is now" is possibly the best song about teenage angst ever written. And Johnny Marr's guitar on that is unique.
