Two animal handlers who were fired by the Gorilla foundation for refusing to expose their breasts to Koko the sign language gorilla were going to sue. A settlement has been reached out of court, thankfully. Such a trial involving a gorilla's nipple fetish and labor rights might have torn our very society appart.

And it's also not clear how proficient Koko truly is at sign language, since the director of the foundation also insists on "interpreting" everything Koko allegedly "says", and won't let independent scientists have access to Koko to verify anything.

I don't think it's all that fair to describe Koko's nipple-thing as a fetish... that ascribes a lot of sexual sophistication onto her and her species, including the possibility of her being a 300lb hairy lesbian... not impossible, but I'm surprised no one's mentioned it!

Appearently, it's common among higher primates. Chimps are fascinated by the naked human form aswell. I've read about them entertaining themselves with Victoria Secrets catalogues etc. It's not sexual, it's just indulging another creature's curiosity, much as they've been forced to indulge ours.

whats frivolous about it? IF they were fired or suffered some other job related loss as a result of not agreeing to work shirtless, i think they have every right to sue. an employer doesnt have the right to make unreasonable demands.

Curiosity as to how you are made, what you look like, and how you differ from them are also potential factors - look at the early meeting of africans and europeans in the 16th-18th C., or even today in some remote areas. I don't think that sexual undertone is analogous to other species when it's not even invariate amongst humans.

I think there's also a common sense factor that you're wilfully ignoring. Letting an animal with the mind of a 4 year old see how you're made is a world away from performing illegal acts on it :)

Performing oral sex on Koko would be illegal, I think - or at least stupidly over the top. My point was it was in a totally different league from the nipples thing, and came from unqualified assumptions about Koko's intentions.
