People who assume. And why I want to do violence to them.

I friggin' hate people who assume shit about you. They look at you, and say, "oh, this person is (insert category), and therefore must believe (insert belief) and probably (insert verb)." You don't know shit about me, you don't know shit about her/him/them...so shut it. I have long hair....and I'm a hippy? How about, I have long hair because I'm a chick with long hair? I don't agree with you, so I'm a commie? How about you don't know shit about my political affiliation, and I cram that smug smile up your *** where it belongs? I eat tofu because I'm for peace? I like my meat still quivering, thank you.

So what stupid, pointless, unfounded crap have strangers said about you?

I've been told I must not be intelligent because I joined the military (by someone on this board). Been told I'm a Nazi because I'm a WWII re-enactor. Have a small penis because I own firearms. just for a few.

People don't assume much about me, or rather, I don't know what they assume. I'm so quiet around most people that I can hardly think that I come off as anything other than quiet and college-student poor.

Well, as a white American male, nobody ever has anything negative to say about me. They all assume I have a job, am a god fearing christian, a law abiding citizen, and vote for one of the two mainstream political parties. It's kind of nice when most of your stereotypes are fairly positive.

I've been called a neocon, a killer, a conservative, a liberal ( but never a centrist ... God forbid! ), a loser, a dickhead, an asshole, a mercenary, a homo, a queer, a gay lover, a male chauvinist, a nazi, etc. The list is long and mostly profane.

Just last week someone accused me of being brainwashed by the GOP because I expressed my dislike for Nancy Pelosi. It was quite funny, they kept going on and on about how my views are those of a brainwashed person, when I hadn't really expressed any views to them except my dislike for one congress person. :p

Oh, and I can count quite a few times that people have assumed that because I am from the south that I am brain-dead, that because I am a Christian I don't listen to anything but gospel music, that because I am Southern Baptist that I am against gay marriage, and that because I believe in abstinence before marriage that I am anti-choice.

I could go on, but you are bored (I assume)

The worst thing is, I can't help but get pissed off when people make loud public statements about me that are based on ridiculous assumptions. You can't fight it though...if you protest and deny, you sound like you're hiding something, and if you say nothing, it seems as though you agree, or are too chicken-shit to defend yourself. Which is why I sometimes want to use my fists. Grr. I had this great dream last night actually, where I went into boxing again, and just ran around punching people out. It was great, because it was ONLY A DREAM. Maybe I should get back into boxing though...just to work out this agression in an acceptable way...and hey, I no longer care about getting my nose broken (one of the reasons I quit)...

I've been called a left-wing liberal nutjob and a right-wing Bush-supporting poopiehead all in the same week. I've been called a militant atheist and a schizophrenic who believes in a fairy in the sky all in one thread on NS.

People have assumed that I am anti-gay because of my religion and assumed that I am gay because I am not anti-gay. People have assumed that I am a man because I am worried about gender issues from all sides, not just from the feminine one. People near constantly assume that I am a Democrat when political talk begins, unless it is economic, then they think I like Bush (haha). When I had short hair, people were much quicker to assume I was a lesbian. I've even had one guy insist, despite my telling him otherwise, that I *must* wear contacts.

Assumption is unavoidable. You show me someone who doesn't assume things about other people and you'll have shown someone with a lobotomy and/or in a completely vegetative state.

I like assumptions. When I make assumptions about people, they're usually negative ones. If they're proved wrong, then yay, the person doesn't suck quite as much! If they're proved right, then yay, I was correct in my initial judgement. I win either way.

Anyway, when I'm in the States and my country of origin comes into play - you should see how people react. They can't tell by my accent anymore most of the time (or just find it a little off) but once I say "I'm German" all hell breaks loose.

Why am I not wearing a uniform, am I a nazi, the typical nazi gestures and remarks - and people believe they're being funny.

Now, that pisses me off beyond belief - And more than once I've asked to please refrain from pissing me off...

2. I don't offer violence to people unless they offer it first, or announce in no uncertain terms that they intend to offer it. I then ride the legal limit in offering it back.

I get a pretty big range, from the way off (hesher) to the close enough to joke about (hippie).

I do have long hair and a long goatee, wear boots etc. but I listen to jazz and classical.

Which then feeds the hippie thing. Honestly that's too convoluted to untangle for people. I'm certainly no hippie and living around them that's patently obvious to anyone paying attention, but people need a short hand so they don't need to pay attention so, whatever. If thier attention span is that dwarfed their opinion frankly doesn't matter much.

The other common assumption is usually dissassembled moments after talking to me, that I'm some big scary dude that's about to unleash on someone. Talk to me for a minute and that's not only out the window, you'll feel silly for thinking it. But pretty often I'll be talking to people who will embaracingly admit to me that they where scared of me when they first met me. I don't get that really, I don't look like a bad ass, I don't try to look like a bad ass, I don't want to look like a bad ass. I think people are just skitish.

My co-workers often thought I was stuck-up, just because I'm quiet and don't like talking much. But as usual, the assumptions died down pretty quick once one of them mentioned a topic I knew something about.

It's hard for me to take assumptions about my personality to heart for very long though, because I know I am kind of difficult to read at times. A comment that might anger me one day, might cause me to laugh the next.

Nonono. That's the assumption. I'm gay, but nowadays when you wear a pink shirt people think it means you're metro, not gay.

Hmm lets see I have been called a racist, a Nazi, a femi-Nazi, a cynic (not a bad guess :p), an elitist (also true), a goth (heh...so what if I am? ), shallow, a dreamer (true  ), overly serious (yeah...shallow and overly serious, wow  ...could be true though), a white supremacist, an imperialist/monarchist (read the Republic if you don't get what I mean by an elite) and even straight. Some people get it right though and call me gay :p Oh yeah, I forgot psychopath.

Well, I've been called gay by, I think the number is, two writers in their essays/articles about homosexuality. Basically their message was roughly to the point of, because I was a misfit that didn't fit in with either society's status quo or sexual status quo, I had to be gay, bisexual, or some sort of transsexual subset.

But then, I could just be assuming that based upon my perceptions of their tone and style in their writing.

Whoa! I didn't think people still remembered that word anymore, much less used it.

First time in approximately 6 months that I've seen metrosexual used.

What other people think of you, is really none of your business? Are you judging them in the same manner that you are judging them?

And just how important is it anyways?

If they don't like you, that is their problem and not yours.

What annoys me is people who want others to assume and then get all pissed off when people actually do assume, like these teenagers that get all dressed up like they are some sort of gangsta/thug/something-or-other and have the nerve to act suprized when the cops stop them for looking suspicious. That and the person with the pink mohawk and a dozen facial piercings that yells "What the #$%@ are you looking at!!?"

Once I figure it out, then I will stop looking.

At the risk of being obtuse.

Some of you need to look at the definition of the word "Assume"

You are actually complaining about presumptions not assumptions.

Assumptions are something you believe with some valid reasons but cannot absolutely prove. For example: I assume that the world will be pretty much the same world tomorrow as it is today. I don't absolutely know that is true but I have today and yesterday to judge my belief by. Some evidence but not conclusive evidence.

Presumptions are something you believe either without reason or in spite of reasons. I believe the sky is going to turn green and yellow plaid because Brad Pit said so on Ophrah = presumption

Assumption that people make about you may not always be bad or wrong, presumptions are always wrong even when they are flattering.

People often say I'm pretentious and elitist because I correct their bad grammar :D buddy!

But they're right. Let's move onto things they've been wrong about:

Goth, because I shop at Hot Topic (which I affectionately call Not Gothic).
Lesbian, and I really don't know why (half right. I'm bi...but I don't think they were going off of anything substantial).
Flaming Liberal (I'm very, very moderate. But you can't help looking liberal in a room full of spoiled rich kids with Republicans for parents . No, that wasn't supposed to be insulting - they are ridiculously rich, and do have Republicans for parents. Straight fact.)
Slut...again, I don't know why (seriously)
Tease, because I refuse to date any of my friends...?
Punk/Emo/Whatever (I wear black and dyed my hair to match)

Those are just your typical high school ones. The rest sort of follow the same trends. Evidently short hair makes me a lesbian - I just tell everyone I keep my bangs long because I'm only half gay.
