clicky (http://www.hlj.me.uk/Dogs%20Of%20This%20Parish.wmv)
any opinions? be kind since it is a first try ;) :)
its a horror flick from the 80s btw (and it gets interesting after the first minute of set-up or so...) no voices cos a) not particularly needed (simple-as-hell plot) and b) lazy. also there are quite a few continuity errors :D
took over 11 years (game time) to film lol, and my entire cast and crew... i just left the game running on fast forward while i went and had my shower :p
as for a more general note, anyone else play The Movies? its well worth getting if you either enjoy managment sims, sim games in general (its a fair bit like The Sims itself), or have ever felt the need to make your own movie epic (and have the creativity and - importantly - patience to do so)

To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with the tycoon part of the game. It's fun at first, but as soon as you have more 12 or so actors/directors it becomes a bit confusing. I was always lacking enough staff/extras/etc. for my productions because there were never enough people to hire around, even though I had lots of money. They should have concentrated more on this Hollywood glamour thing I think.
It's a nice game, but not that innovative as I hoped. The make-your-own-movie-feature is nice though.

yeah i'm finding something similar. the managment side of things is too easy (to make money), but its hard/confusing to actually run your studio... which makes the ease with which you make money all the more silly.
plus, once you get to the late 90's, there doesn't seem that much else to research/do other than make your (aging) staff happy (also too easy) and churn out more and more movies... entertaining but in no way challenging.
but the movie making thing is cool and i sadly ignored it for the first week of having the game or so... just getting into fiddling about with it properly now :)
got any movies to share with us then? ;)

Another problem I had was that the studio lot was so small. I always had to tear down some sets to build new ones.

No, I uninstalled it completely because I needed disk space. I need another harddrive I guess.
Nice movie btw. - but it's a bit slow in the beginning. Maybe you should take it to the edit room and shorten some of those first scenes. The fight in the wood could be a bit faster too.
Interesting sidenote: it seems that if you upload your movies to the Lionhead site, they gain rights over your movies. Read here (http://www.secretlair.com/index.php?/clickableculture/entry/the_moviesuser_created_content/) for more information.

yeah i wanted to pick it up at the beginning but i couldn't be bothered to re-move all the sound effect cues after i'd put them in (and already moved them about a dozen times or so  ...another annoying niggle!)

i haven't posted up any there yet cos they'll remove movies that use copyrighted music in them, and i don't make any of my custom movies without (at least some) decent/real/non-game music :p

the zombie was a facist, it just didn't come out in the movie too well. he owned a number of shoe factories and payed his workers awful wages, and made them walk to work too. he had to go ;)

It's praise of a sort... :) It reminded me very much of (Season 2-ish) Buffy... the zombie, the cheesy martial arts, the Giles-like Preacher who rushes in... only to get bashed senseless, the unkillable-by-weapons-forged badguy, the rocket-launcher finale... etc.
I may have to obtain the game at some point.

Pff, you aughtta try it in a real film. Ugh, ugh I say.
The metal song in the middle that spans so much makes the whole thing feel a bit more like a music video (ala Thriller) than a film unto itself. Though I like the Kung Fu Zombie, that's a nice touch.
You had some good camera moves in there. Pretty cool game. Doesn't play well on Macs it looks like. Which is okay, I knew I wasn't getting games on this when I bought it. I need my computer to do more important things...wish I could play that game though.,,

i can only imagine doing it with real film
i mean, the tiny bit of real video editing i do is pain-in-the-arse enough to make a (half decent) 5 minute short vid :p
what kind of real film editing have you been involved in, out of curiosity?
and the metal song in the middle probably was a bit OTT, but it was what "inspired" me to make a horror movie in the first place... i've been gunning after (and working on) a cops n' robbers 70s style action movie for a while but this was easier and quicker to make so i did this one first :)

That's a sentiment I hear more and more often on the internet. People are getting tired of Return of the Sequel: Part II, half-baked attempts of innovation and mindless hyping campaigns.
I find myself spending more and more time reading about gaming culture instead of playing games. What was the last game that really impressed me? Can't even say. Vice City perhaps (hadn't played GTA III before).

Ha ha... it was intended as praise... but some people get all offended when you tell them their artistry reminds you of something else.... (A good friend who used to have a band would get MOST offended at such suggestions).
But, of course, Buffy ROCKS.

I play the game but i havent made my own film yet. The problem is there are never enough people around to hire. and the lot is too small, can you ever get a bigger one? Hell, they didnt have these problems in theme park, its like theyve stepped back ten years. and the framerate sucks.
I still love it though

vice city was great (not much of an improvement over III but still, was good). similarly, san andreas was quite good and featured a few good gameplay advances, but mostly games nowadays seem to concentrate on the graphics and leave gameplay to an afterthought :(

Pretty entertaining, I liked the look of the zombie and the knife fight/kung-fu was cool.
I was disappointed that there was not more gore, I wanted to see gallons of blood :(
You might wanna work on your pacing, it's a little stilited, I think the movie could afford to be quite a bit shorter.
The reveal of the zombie at the beginning works a little against your favour by being not scary at all, it's more like "oh look, there's a zombie" then "HOLY %^*!! It's a ZOMBIE!" If you get my meaning.
Tighter camerawork would have been nicer too, can you do close-ups in that game?
Also the music might need some reworking.
Sorry, I'm a niggly film student prick who has just finished a large horror piece myself, thus I'm being judgemental to work out my own failings. ;)

My degree is in Film and Digital Media with a concetration in production. I had to make a few films in school and sound editing was one of the things that took me fooooooorrrrrrrrreeeeeeeevvvvvvvveeeeeerrrrrr. I also edit the docs that I work on covering dirt track racers. I don't do much sound there though, as the producer usually uses wall to wall music.
