Shrug, I'm doing ROTC because I've wanted to be in the army for a minimum of 4 years. Doing so simply to avoid some debt is not worth it IMO, just not the right motivation. Infact in my case I'm forgoing enough future income that going in the Army may as well be a net-loss.
Of course if your future profession is starving artist... well, yeah.

If you would give it 110% and you need the money, Uncle Sam pays really good, and medical is free, as is housing, and food.
BUT, and please don't take offense to this, because I'm not accusing, if you will go in just for the money, and punk out like a little bitch (again, I'm not accusing) when it's war time, then stay the fuck out, because the military doesn't need people like that. They all need to count on eachother to be there for eachother when the going gets tough!

Until you get sent to some country on the other side of the world 'for a year' and are still there 3 years later. The army pretty much owns you after you join.

So have you given any thought to your Branch then? Planning on being in the shit Infantry or in DC Adjunct General? Its also worth noting that you might still go in debt to cover your housing. The Army covers Tution+Fees+monthly stipend (free cash) but not housing.

wow, strong opinion. First, I am no patriot but i am more than willing to join, not only would i fight, Id survive. The military would hold no suprises for me. Any idea based solely on gain is a bad idea anyway. Its in my blod to solder so i might as well.

Housing would be the only complication, wouldnt that be a huge relif?

What?
B.A.H. Base Allowance for Housing (http://www.highbeam.com/library/doc0.asp?DOCID=1P1:29468441&refid=holomed_1). ALL branches pay it out. It's an off base housing pay allowance calculated by local cost of living.

Fair enough, I guess if you know exactly what you're getting in to then you are more informed to make the choice than most people who join their army. Whats my ssc? (not American) When I think of SSC I think of here (http://www.ssc.govt.nz/display/home.asp) which is where my father works..

You should see the houses for the Air Force! Fucking beautiful! Of course, you need to either have kids, or be married to qualify. Luckily, I took the big dive! :D

There are other ways to pay for college that don't neccisarily result in debt. In California we have the Pell grant that can pay for a great deal of it. If your art is up to snuff you can use that to get scholarships that will also pay a lot of your way. Americorp also exchanges service for tuition.
If you're dead set on service go for the Coast Guard, at least there you'll be (hopefully) rescuing people instead of shooting them.

hmm well judging by your spelling you could do with the extra education apart from that i can't believe anyone would be so desperate as to join the armed forces just to be able to go to college, seeing as you have the option don't do it.

No branches pay it out for while you're in College. Housing Allowance kicks in once you're in the military. Not while in ROTC.

I didnt lie and say i was a novelist, give me a break, it's not desperation. It can best be viewed as me doing a few years to gain in the funds area and send a positive message to the rest of my family. Being the first of 7 i sort of have to worry about that.

Did you just slight someone's spelling in a run on sentence with no capatilization?

That would be a dastardly villian. But yeah, I agree. That's why I say favor the branch that does more saving people than shooting. If you have to do a service.

He's not a novelist and i'm not a grammar Nazi. I don't know how positive joining the American military can be? Training to and potentially killing people just to make some money... Rather like a mercenary or a mobster except it's sanctioned by the law.

I think there are lots more constructive things you could do to not feel worthless, or a leech on society. I second the coastguard idea or something similar... DEFINITELY more worthwhile than joining the war machine.
I'm not from the states, but aren't there other ways of studying art or giving your skills some direction without spending thousands on college? Maybe vocational training as a graphic designer or web designer, or teaching yourself the programs that will help you in these careers (like Photoshop, Flash etc) - then you can use your art to earn money. You can always do your own projects on the side....
Make art not war! :D

And in some cases also causing some rather good things to happen to a nation. Though I suppose we could have let places like S.Korea never come into existence.
