Right, I'm going to list some major political parties from several countries, but feel free to suggest more parties as well as more countries (particularly the latter!). Basically, just say who you think you'd vote for if you lived in one of these countries...hypothetical thingie. Excuse any mistakes I make for other countries with these initial choices..

USA:

Republican Party: right-wing (rarely libertarian)
Democratic Party: center/center-left/center-right
Green Party: green
Libertarian Party: libertarian capitalist
Constitution: very conservative
Reform:

UK:

Conservative Party: centre-right to right-wing
Labour Party: centre-right to left
Liberal Democrats: centre to centre-left

Canada:

Liberal Party: liberal
Conservative Party: conservative
New Democratic Party: social democratic

Australia:

Democrats: left(ish)
Greens: green
Labor: center-left
Family First: social conservatives

Daisy-Democracy is Freedom: Christian democracy, centrism, liberalism
Left-Wing Democrats: social democrats
Forza Italia: liberalism, conservatism, populism
National Alliance: conservative
Communist Refoundation Party: eurocommunist

Israel:

ooh. Not easy. This is going to be a rough guesstimate, since I'm not going to check out the policies of all these parties.

US: I'm not fond of either the GOP or the Dems, although I'd vote Dem before Republican. Put me down for Green if Nader runs for them again.

UK: Liberal Democrats

Canada: NDP, natch. ;)

Australia: none of the above - I'd probably go with a fringe party, or maybe Democrat (you know, so I can say that I have the word "Democrat" in every party I selected :P) or Green

Germany: Social Democratic Party, I guess. But I don't really know any of these parties very well

US:

Depends upon where I would be living, and who the local candidates are. So either Rep. or Dem.

UK:

No question. Tory. The family has been tory since it was first used as a slur.

Australia:

Liberal, I would imagine. But it would depend upon the specific circumstances &c.

Canada:

The Bloc apparently. But I suppose I would have to move to Quebec to do it.

Germany:

FDP i suppose. Agian I would imagine it would depend upon a whole range of variables.

Democrats: ???
The Democrats are a kind of left (-ish) civil rights party. They oppose things like anti-terror laws, but they're not as extreme as the Greens.

National: ???
The National Party is a party that stands for rural interests. Farmers and Miners and so on in Australia live far away from the cities, and therefore they require rather different political representation.
But since the National Party has entered a lasting coalition, it is always siding with the Liberal Party now - so you can cleanly put them on the "Conservatives" side.

Just a filler for the Australian parties. the Australian Democrats are very liberal and fairly far to the left (although not quite as far left as the Australian Greens), and are currently a spent force in Australian politics as more and more people who used to vote Democrat have started voting Green.

The Australian National Party are social and economic conservatives with a strong rural-interests platform, and they mainly represent country and outback seats rather than the big city. They're the smaller half of a longstanding and very stable coalition in all states and at the federal level with the Australian Liberal Party, and often have to compromise their "looking after the farmer" opinions in favour of the Liberal Party's economic rationalist approach.

I wonder if we should muddy the waters a bit more by lettting people know that in Australia you can vote for more than one candidate :)

USA: Green Party

UK: Liberal Democrats

Canada: Tough to say...depends on the situation. But it'd probably be the Liberal Party.

Australia: Greens

Germany: Last time I went with the CDU...but I am a swing voter, I've got no fixed preferences.

In Israel it would be whatever leaves Palestine alone. Probably Labour, but we'll see whether Peres can pull Sharon further to the left.
