I've been in Japan for almost 15 years now. I'm from Texas. I'm an experienced ESL teacher. And there is a very slim chance I may want to leave Japan for financial reasons in the next year or so. Nothing certain yet, and unlikely so far, but just as a thought, sell me on your country, if it's on the poll. If it's not on the poll, it'll be a hard sell.

(And wait for the poll, please.)

I can't be the only one beginning to doubt the existance of this so-called "poll"

New York! Coolest, most energetic place in the world, where there's always something to do!

EDIT: New York is a city of immigrants, so ESL is always in pretty high demand either professionally or after-school tutoring.

Come to Canada! We're ranked #3 of the best places to live after Sweden and I think Norway... and there are lots of immigrants so lots of people to teach ESL to.

Plus we have health care. :)

hawai'i is nice, but the housing market there is completely fucked. chicago is nice and there are new condos, apartments, and houses going up like its going out of style. but it suddenly got bastardly cold here and i don't like it anymore.

Question. Would you have voted for Bush or Kerry if you had voted in the election?

Neither. The main reason I didn't vote was because I hated both of them. And I knew Bush would carry Texas, where my ballot ends up (that was the last place I was registered to vote while living in the US.)

More telling is that my home district is represented by Tom DeLay, whom I detest on both political and personal grounds, and my neighboring district is represented by Dr. Ron Paul, whom I greatly admire on both political and personal grounds (yes, I met both long ago).

Canada.... West Coast seems OK.

Chicago's nice. Lots of sports, great summer weather (great winter weather too if you don't mind freezing your ass off). Not sure as to the ESL needs, but I'd assume any urban community would have a high demand for that.

From what I hear, Ireland is a country in a Golden Age. It'd be fun.

Australia can be nice too, but that all depends whether you can get along with their peculiarities.
Coming from Germany we found some of their practices (particularly in the labour market) less than impressive.

Plus land, lots and lots of land. We have the lowest population density in the world. The west coast of Canada is pretty nice. The Fraser Valley rarely gets more than a few days of below zero weather. Alot of people will need to be taught ESL. Drugs are de facto legal and easy to find. Vancouver has been rated best place to live/raise a family/through a bachelor party in North America many times.

Which ones? The must-fellate-your boss-to-get-recognised-for-a-promotion rule, the family nepotism within all the big corporations, or the yearly union-squashing derby? Or something else?

Note for future reference: New York =/= USA. Therefore I can't, according to your rules, recommend either North Carolina or the USA in general. :p

You are in Japan why would you want to move?
If I was a teacher (I dont know what ESL is) I would move to a small island in the Pacific were people are few and poor and build a hut or something on the beach. Build a small school and have anice life you know. I would have to come from a rich family though.

As a southern californian, I felt woefully unrepresented. But then I remembered that I applied to colleges on the east coast for a reason. new york and chicago are both awesome (i've spent lots of time in both). i would lean towards chicago for their taste of chicago in july (massive food and music festival) and their public transportation. chicago is just cleaner than new york. but you also get what i consider better culture in new york.

the west coast of canada is really nice, too.

ESL = English as a Second Language

As for the why, like I said above, financial reasons. There is a possibility of being forced onto the national health insurance plan unwillingly. This would be a Very Bad Thing, but it's a topic for another thread.

Poratar, I've been there and didn't like it much. Although San Diego might be better than LA. San Francisco was nice.

Stay in Japan so I don't have to be the only NSer here. :D

Stateside, Nevada is nice, good job climate, especially with ESL. Wonderful nature, and an easy tax system.

Avoid Vegas like the plague, settle up north though. ;)

Hence why I am escaping away to college. I live in orange county, made infamous by the damned show The OC...which everyone here watches. I always thought that was rather redundant (and just plain stupid) of them.

San Diego is nice. Coronado island (peninsula off of the SD coast) is really nice, in a beachy town sort of way. But not a lot of need for an ESL teacher on the island.

I agree. Either San Diego or San Fran are WAY nicer than LA. they are both pretty, cultured and temperate. Personally, I'd lean towards San Francisco, even though it dosen't have that warm summers iirc, but no cold winters either. Of course, in general, I'd still go with New York. It's snowing now, and the entire city looks like a frosted cake from my window.:)

After looking at your NS nation's budget, the only country you should consider moving to is the US:

Government Priority: Defence

Defence: $11,078,695,176,765.22 52%

Law & Order: $3,195,777,454,836.12 15%

Do you wear body armour when you are out and about?

Its not on the poll, but Costa Rica absolutely ROCKS.

Beautiful countryside, progressive government, no military (hence, no military budget, allowing for lots of better govt programs) friendly people, super cheap real estate, gorgeous weather day in/day out.

Oh wait...i'm gonna move there. So all you fools stay out....don't come ruin this paradise on earth.
