Does anyone happen to know this?

Little thing. But why do I grind my teeth at night? I've never heard of anyone else doing this before ever and my mom says that I grind them pretty loud and that I've been doing this for at least a couple years by now.

My back teeth are starting to pain like crazy this past week and the dentist assistant says that it's probably because I'm grinding my teeth.

I grind my teeth sometimes. Stress is what does it for me.

Get a mouthguard or ask your dentist to get fitted for some special splints. It keeps your enamel from gettine worn down at least and at best keeps your jaw from moving in a grinding motion.

Even without pain or tooth problems, I grind my teeth. Sometimes so loud that my wife chooses to sleep on the couch.

Some doctors have told me that it's because of stress, but when I ask them for strong muscle relaxing, happy drugs, they furrow their brows and try to change the diagnosis.

Maybe it's genetic.

So the basic answer is stress then?

Makes sense. Well now I got a killer jaw and a fear of drinking or eating cold or hot things.

For temporary relief, get one of those boil and bite mouthguards they use for sports. Get to your dentist ASAP, they can fit you witha custom, more refined one.

Wait, is that a standard kind of mouthguard or is it an actual specific kind that I need to get?

And I should wear it during night right?

Because mom wouldn't be able to afford a dentist appointment for at least a week or two.

No, just get a standard one. They're availible really cheap at most sporting good stores and many supermarkets.

You ONLY wear it during the night. That's when you grind your teeth. You wear it then.

Your custom ones probablg going to run you 50-100 dollars. Insurence will probably cover most of it.

And what do you mean only at night?

On Monday I'm going to try and see if I clench my jaw hard during school because that might also be a contributing factor.

Apart from the obvious look that I have something in my mouth, is it bad to have it during the day...if I find that it'll keep my jaw from clenching?

Stop grinding your teeth. Not to add to your stress or anything... ;)

One of my brothers was a grinder--you could hear him from down the hall at night; some nights it sounded like a car wreck. I was/am a clencher (not as hard on your teeth; harder on the joints). Nothing makes me clench more than trying not to clench.

One thing that does seem to work (in addition to a bite guard), is to get in the habit during the day of putting the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth (right behind your front teeth--but don't push on your teeth). Your tongue will get used to being in that position and naturally go there at night as well, which helps to keep your back molars separated.

And drugs. Drugs help. :p

Just worry about the night right now. Take down daytime grinding later.

My father use to do that. He never had anything done about it, as far as I know, but you could sometimes stand in the hall outside their bedroom and hear him grinding his teeth. I suspect, although I have no way of knowing for sure, that all the supressed anger he carried around was coming out that way when he slept. :(
