Do you know what I dont get? We have great sports in this country like Baseball, football, hockey yet it seems that soccer is on the rise. I have noticed more ads on the tv and radio for soccer than any other sports lately. I dont like it at all, we have four great sports in this country, we dont need another lesser one.

soccer isn't a lesser sport, it's a harder sport, they don't get halftime.

(or at least we didn't when I played)

it's running and running and running and then you have to run some more, it take endurance, and it's fun.

*and we have a lot of immigrants from Mexico coming in who like it.

Well to me sports arent just about endurance (or I wouldnt like baseball so much.) I say if endurance and running is so important to you, do track or cross country.

Have you seen NHL ratings lately? Hockey hasn't been one of the "four great sports" for several years now. Texas Hold 'Em does better than hockey.

hey I was trying to be nuetral on the subject.

I did get kicked out of PE when I was in high school for trying to convince the coach that skateboarding was more of a sport then track.

"you go out in my back yard on my half pipe and do a 540 and I will go run around in circles and lets see who needs more skill/coordination"

anyway, I never did learn the rules to soccer when I played they basically said
"don't use your hands, run that way, try to put the ball in the net"

which is about the same I know about any other sports.

football (American)
"run that way, if you can catch the ball then do, don't drop the ball, if someone knocks you down don't drop the ball"

I'm from England, but I'd just like to say that you should try joining in sports that the rest of the world plays. Unless you're scared of losing of course, then you should stick with games that only the USA and possibly Canada play.

My favourite sport is Rugby (which I do also play), and then it's Football (Soccer to you American-types). They're a lot more exciting! :p

I agree on Rugby on the little bit that Ive seen, it looks like much more fun than football where they have all these pads, I think football is for people who are to weak to play rugby.

I agree, and I'm from the US. Used to play both, in fact, but after ruining my back from packing in too many times and against much bigger guys on the rugby pitch, I just coach football.

Football is simple, easy to play and very fun. American Football stutters like a bad CD, Baseball somehow manages to be more boring than Cricket and Basketball is only occasionally exciting.

Football will win in the end, it is INEVITABLE.

It's those damn Mexicans coming across our borders with their tequila-fueled knife fights and crazy sports. They can't get enough of that soccer and since there are more of them lately it's become profitable to show it on TV.

Are you saying that hockey is just in shambles now in the states? Or are you trying to say it is in general.

I mean, for much of the states, I can see why hockey might not be popular. If you live in a place where you never get ice, for instance...

I always thought in soccer you need heaps of skill when you used to playing with your hands and then play soccer it's hard to remind yourself that the ball heading towards your face cant be caught with your hands.

Yeah, football does need a bit of skill with your feet... but you pick it up pretty quickly.

The ball is a different shape to the one you can catch, so it's not so hard to avoid catching it. If you're -really- good at catching a ball, you could become a goal keeper anyway. :)

Until you've played football, don't speak. THose pads do shit to protect you. If I had a dime for every scar and bruise that is under where those pads should be, I'd be very rich. OR at least I'd own a boat.

My best friends have been wheeled off to ambulences. I'VE been wheeled off in ambulences. The difference between the two sports is the SPEED. Football has very heavy people moving very fast. That hurts when they collide.

And people playing Rugby don't (get wheeled off in ambulances)? The only difference really is that in American Football, the players go all-out, because they know that they are wearing at least some protection. Rugby has it's own laws to stop people from being tackled dangerously, where they might break their neck, spine, etc. but it does still happen.

There are many different types of builds that are suitable for Rugby (Union at least), so it's not suitable to say that all people are light and fast, or heavy and slow.

I'd say it's a bit less dangerous, actually. The moment you play without the big visored helmets, and the heavy armour, then I'll give you respect. ;)

Besides, a sport being dangerous doesn't make it good... Rugby is also a very good team game, with every single person having a defined job to do on the pitch, but also being able to do anything, aswell.

The three biggest American sports are rising around the world. While soccer is rising in America a little its still not a prime choice in the world of spectators sport. At least I dont find the concept of chasing a ball around kicking it entertaining.

Heh, if it wasn't for that "heavy armor" there wouldn't even be American football; Theodore Roosevelt was going to make playing football a felony if they didn't make the game safer because too many people were dying.

Football or Soccer as you call it is a great sport with world class players, if you like a bunch of fat guys beating each other to a pulp for a few goals like in "football" thats your thing but you wont see a better SPORT then Soccer.
Give WC 2006 a chance, if you dont like it then you dont.

American Football was based on Rugby anyway. The two games have just evolved differently since then, with the American version of the game deciding to have stops every few seconds, whereas Rugby is a fairly free-flowing game.

You might have a point about basketball, but that's old news (in case you did not notice Croatia, Spain or Lithuania). But all around the world it has a different set of rules than the one in place in the US.
As for baseball and Am. football, South Korea and Denmark do not ammount to "around the world". Face it, it's not gonna happen. Ever.

I play american football and while I personally don't enjoy soccer(everybody elses football) that much, I don't think it is a lesser sport. Soccer is a sport for people who have good foot-eye coordination and running endurance. American football is a sport of strength. It's a contact sport. Soccer can get pretty rough but its not like american football. i personally like soccer more than basketball.

"The world is flat"

Bada bing. Lotta wrong people there.
It's a complete myth that before Columbus everyone (or even close to a majority) thought the world was flat. All the ancient peoples knew the world was roughly spherical, and many tired to estimate its size (with varying degrees of success). Anyone who has travelled over the horizon a couple of times (which must be most of the people that have ever existed) quickly realises that the world isn't flat. 'Flat-Earthers' have always been a minority.
