Surely you mean football - a name to describe a sport in which you play a ball with your foot and is therefor named this (translated of course) in almost every country in the world ?

Especially in the country where these forums are hosted ;)

Football, not soccer! Foot+ball, =football. Everywhere except USA of course, but they don't count.

Anyways, the answer is something outside of Europe. And it is the BRAZILIAN NATIONAL TEAM. It'll walk over the rest of the world in Germany, all the signs are in the air already...

I dont know anything about the sport, but Manchester United made the movie Green Street Hooligans possible so they must be good.

The best team in Europe is generally the best in the world (wouldn't be so if there were more money to be made in S. America), so by that measure it'd be Liverpool. Hah! Yeah, right. Barcelona all the way. Then Juventus, Bayern, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester United. Mind you, I voted Arsenal, but that's because I'm biased.

Has Brasil ever won a world cup held in Europe?

I think since it is in Europe, it'll be England, Holland, Italy, or Germany taking it home. Germany isn't that great right now, but they will be playing at home... and home-field advantage (easy group, kind referees) is huge for the home team.

Man Utd in the Poll but Chelsea not? what the hell is that about? Man U have no chance in the league or champions league, they arent even the best team in the country never mind the world. And thats before Keane left.

Yes, it's an abbreviation of 'Association Football'. However, so is 'football'. As the sport involves kicking a ball, with one's foot, I think the sensible abbreviation here is 'football'. Rather than using it for a game where the majority of the action involves throwing the ball with your hand...

Yes...what have they won in the last 10 years? One league title, two League Cups, and two FA Cup. Compare to, say, Manchester United, Arsenal, or even Liverpool, who, collectively, in the last 5 years, have won more than Chelsea have ever won. Make that the last 3 years.

Ah, but that doesn't make them any worse than they are. Historically, it's not Chelsea, but at this moment, I'd say they were.

With Chelsea on form, they'd be able to beat any team you could put up against them, I'd say. (Before anyone says anything, yes I know they have an owner with £8bn, or more in the bank, but still...)

I believe its almost impossible to say, considering the vast amount of statistics you would have to take into account; Arsenal with an unbeaten record in one season, but crap in Europe; the Italien teams usually doing well in Europe, but domestically in all sorts of financial trouble; Brazil, with vast amounts of talent yet still exporting players (although this trend is slowing apparently, with examples such as Tevez moving to Brazil rather than to Europe).

Is it current form? Historical form? The ability to score goals, or the ability to clich a 1-0 lead then hold it? or the ability to get the luck in the right place a the right time (Liverpool FC last year)?

So, IMHO, its impossible to have a definitive best, although a group of good teams is certainly possible.

on the other hand... European teams have tried to win in SA or in neutral ground (North America or Asia)... but they have been defeated everytime.

F-O-O-T-B-A-L-L. Say it with me...

I'm afraid I can only lie so much on a thread like this...

Chelsea play a very compact, efficient style that doesn't really excite, but it works extremely well. Throw in the billionaire owner and you have a successful formula.

Juventus are a solid, if unspectacular team. They do, however, have one of the very best midfields in the world, and who can forget Zlatan, what a star...

Barcelona are (keep in mind, this is very difficult for me to say), IMO, the best club team in the world. They are defensivley solid, and they play an exciting style that makes people stand up and take notice. Oh, and it doesn't hurt when you have the world's best player and the next Maradona either.

But rest assured, we'll be back! As soon as Perez and his psychotic idea of the galacticos are overthrown, we'll be back...

It really was painful for me to compliment Barca... but they're just that good at the moment...

At the moment I'd have to say Barcelona takes the cake.

Emotional favourite though is FC Schalke 04 (http://www.schalke04.de/14_home/home.php) and Hamburger SV (http://www.hsv.de/index.php?id=9431).

As far as English football is concerned...not a fan. Never was. I wish they'd stick to Cricket (and get raped by Pakistan  ).

No offense... but this thread and the posts within reflects an overwhelming Anglo-Saxon point of view. As a result, French teams are totally ignored!

Should I recall you that the Olympique Lyonnais crushed the Real Madrid 3-0 ?
(and actually made a draw in Bernabeu, 1-1, in what is, as far as I am concerned, one of the worst match of the OL).

The OL remains the only undefeated team in Europe.

Pfft. French teams are rubbish... Lyon wouldn't make it anywhere near the top of the Eglish, Spanish or Italian leagues.

I did consider Lyon, as they have a fantastic record in the last couple of years in Europe, but I don't think they make the top 10 teams in the world. I made my list thinking about how good the teams are on peak form - Lyon would probably make the top 15 then, but not the top 10.

And Arsenal are also undefeated this season in Europe...though having now just seen the French league table, I guess you mean in domestic leagues. Though being a pedant, the top two in the Cypriot league (Apollonas and Apoel Nicosia) are both undefeated this season.

Of course, I was considering both the national championship and the European competitions. Anyway, I guess the OL will reach the semi-finals in Champions's League once again.

Most likely...Lyon are one of the teams I'm hoping Arsenal don't get drawn against in the first knockout round of the CL (not sure if Real can finish first - I know they're 3 points behind, but not sure how they work it out, goal difference or results between the teams). Also want them to avoid Bayern/Juventus, Real Madrid, AC Milan/PSV (not so bothered about Schalke). I'd prefer Artmedia Bratislava, that'd be fine. Then, say Udinese in the quarter-finals. Beat them, and it's the furthest Arsenal will ever have managed in the CL.

German TV commentators (on Premiere) always refer to Arsenal as Arsenal London and Chelsea as Chelsea London. Drives me insane, they also refer to Anfield as Anfield Road, so bloody irritating.
