Quick computer question

If something is "shareware," does that mean it's free to download? There's a game I wanted to download (ftp://ftp.volftp.mondadori.com/pub/mac/game/barney-carnage-25.hqx), and it says "shareware," but no price is listed.

Thanks!

Shareware often means that you get to play parts of the game, but have to pay for the full game. Just download and see.

It can also mean that in order to play the game, you'll agree to install some other stuff on your machine - which is usually spyware.

Thanks. Is there a place I can download the relevant software to play a Macintosh game on a Microsoft computer?

I guess that would be difficult. There is stuff like PearPC (http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/index.html) that let's you emulate the Mac PowerPC architecture - but you'd still have to install Mac OS somehow.

But to be honest - I don't know...

That's a potentially complicated, aggravating, and difficult thing to do at the moment, especially to play a single game. I'm pretty sure that, when it comes to games, there's a PC version somewhere.

Shareware software usually has a readme file that will tell you how to buy it if you choose to do so. If you download from places like www.downloads.com or www.tucows.com you can read reviews to see what other people think of it and if there's spyware or something else you should be aware of.

You could try
http://www.emulators.com/softmac.htm

But no guarantees

If it says either "shareware" or "freeware", consider it a green light.

I never had much luck with the earlier versions of Softmac, however BasiliskII and Fusion seemed to work quite well (given their limitations - ie. being unable to emulate PPC architecture). Heck, even vMac worked better than SoftMac.
