Gymoor, forget global warming - mini ice age coming

Yes, it can get warmer in some places - and then turn to ice in others...

Failing ocean current raises fears of mini ice age

The ocean current that gives western Europe its relatively balmy climate is stuttering, raising fears that it might fail entirely and plunge the continent into a mini ice age.

The dramatic finding comes from a study of ocean circulation in the North Atlantic, which found a 30% reduction in the warm currents that carry water north from the Gulf Stream.

The slow-down, which has long been predicted as a possible consequence of global warming, will give renewed urgency to intergovernmental talks in Montreal, Canada, this week on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.

Well, it is Fucking cold here.

But, alas, it's always an Ice Age in Michigan!

Apparently, the Atlantic Conveyor will stop, and Europe will get farging cold really fast.

IIRC, there was a mini ice age in Europe before, along with "The Year With No Summer".

Fun!

You must be joking.

Global warming causes ice caps to melt. Ice caps melting forcs North Atlantic Drift further south. Northern Europe gets cold.

It's all as a direct result of global warming.

It seems that whenever there is a conference held, or a speech given about global warming, it always has such an ironic backdrop. You think that the proponents would stop scheduling these events after November, wouldn't you? I mean a video clip from a global warming conference in Death Valley, in August, would be much more persuasive.

The hippies were talking about it in the 70's. They found cocaine in the 80's. Now its global warming...

What the fuck? The Ice age story was first spouted in the 70's. Global warming was nowhere to be found in the media. Wasnt until the early 90's did the whole global warming issue come up. Was trying to make a joke. But your to young to get it.

Sounded less like a joke and more like fundamentalist bullshit to me.

This is hardly the same thing.

It has been established for some time that changing climate conditions change the amount of water that is introduced into the sea, and that this (together with changing salinity) influences the Gulf Stream.

And without the Gulf Stream, Europe would be much colder. It's not an "Ice Age" as in a global thing, but for Europe it will make little difference (although it probably won't lead to huge glaciers coming back just yet).

I got it.. made me chuckle.

Remembering all the nuclear winter stories etc.

But this time it's true. You see, Bush has the US Navy sinking all the offshore oil wells in the Gulf during all the hurricane storms when no one is watching and thinking it's all storm damage, so that the Gulf of Mexico current gets clogged and redirected towards Africa again... It will stop taking temperate weather to Europe anymore and the EU will never be a threat to American supremacy ever again!!!! MWAhahahahahha :D

Sigh.

You realize that the Atlantic Conveyor has been part of Global Warming Theory for some time, and predictions of a cooling N. Europe are consistent with climate change models?

This is why climate change is such a risk. The more it progresses, the more we see how it upsets the climactic stabilities our population centers gather around.

If you were in australia you wouldnt doubt global warming we have been in drought for 3 years and a mini ice-age is true because the current that carries warmth the western europe needs salt water to sink and cool down on it's way back to america but alas with the ice-caps melting a increase in fresh water is pouring into the sinking spot thus slowing the process in about 50 years it can stop completely thus creating a mini-ice age.

Also there is the thing about global-dimming but thats another story all together.

If the current remains as weak as it is, temperatures in Britain are likely to drop by an average of 1C in the next decade, according to Harry Bryden at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton who led the study. "Models show that if it shuts down completely, 20 years later, the temperature is 4C to 6C degrees cooler over the UK and north-western Europe," Dr Bryden said.

Which will the again lead to increasing CO2 production when people turn up their central heating.

I might add that this scenario is highly unfair. We don't even get the "benefits" of global warming.

BTW, does anyone have a link to the global warming scenarios of the IPPC? Couldn't find anything on their site. I'm also looking for this CIA scenarios - I've read that they labelled global warming as the number #1 threat of the 21st century.

It looks like where I live (Virginia), we'll be getting tropical weather year-round from the global warming, and the people in Germany will get "the year without a summer" every year.

IIRC, the Mini Ice Age in Europe was only about 3C lower on average. 6C lower is really going to suck.

Apparently, the Mini Ice Age also had a lot of completely unpredictable weather in Europe, causing repeated crop failures. While modern agriculture may be more resistant, it's still going to hurt.

Something tells me that the conveyance of warm water away from the oceans around the Americas also is a cooling method that reduces the number of hurricanes. If you figure that the conveyor is already 30% shot, and we had 26 named storms this year, we're going to get more hurricanes while Europe freezes their socks off.
