The official gay discussion thread

Skaladora

Well, seeing as I and a few others nearly took over a thread or two socializing, I thought this might be a good opportunity for all Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender/Gay friendly/ persons on NS to chat and otherwise be friendly.

Makes yourselves comfortable!

Well, being on wrong side of prejudices usually makes you ponder about the value of pre-made assumptions on people you don't know.

I know I could never be a racist, sexist or otherwise bigot after going through that. That wouldn't be very consistant.

Well it did with me. I'm overall appreciated as a nice person, and if I'm not tolerant, then I'm acceptant of differences.

You saw a gay neo-nazi club? Wtf?

On a side note, this doesn't mean anything about gays in general. For all I know there might have been a handful fo jews stupid enough to form a neo-nazi club, and that doesn't mean the majority of jews don't condemn nazism.

While not being any of the afformentioned orientations, it's pretty hard not to be gay-friendly when one of my best friends is a lesbian who I may or may not be in a deeper relationship with.

Y'know, not to mention the fact that there's no reason not to like people based on something like sexual orientation. One might as well dislike all people with blue eyes. :)

On a side note, we should really avoid kidding over that issue: there are people out there who really think homosexuality is a disease and can be cured. I remember reading about a so-called "therapy" to turn gay men heterosexual using the power of Christ, indoctrination and conditionning. And that is scary.

They sometimes use aversion therapy where they give the gay person drugs that make them vomit every time they feel aroused and leave them in a small room with not even a bucket for any 'waste' and a lot of gay porn... This used to be done a lot more than it is now though but it is just... I don't know the words to describe how bad it really is.

Anyway, this is my first ever post here having read the porn thread I came to find this one, I'm 17 and a lesbian in the UK... That's a pretty brief introduction but it will do!

Hiya!

I'm not gay. Of course, I'm not really fully straight either, although I'm in a long-term (hopefully lifetime) straight relationship, so I probably won't be exploring lesbianism anymore. I'd call myself bisexual, but I'm much more often attracted to guys than to girls, so some would say that doesn't count. *Shrug*

I'm definitely gay-friendly though! =) Some of my friends have labeled me their favorite fruitfly! =)

I hope you're kidding - but I have this terrible sinking feeling that you're not. Surely they don't still do this sort of thing to people? I mean, aren't we a bit more enlightened than that now? .... *looks at the fundies trying to teach creationism (oh, sorry, "ID") as a science rather than as theology, the anti-abortionists, the furore about gay marriages*... Ok, maybe we aren't. But that's just ... you're right, there are no words to describe how horrendous that is.

Oh and hi, I'm female and straight, but I have several gay friends. I firmly believe that someone's sexual orientation is nobody's business but their own (and the person they want to shag...).

Being homosexual does not make someone any less of a person than anyone else. Homosexuality is most certainly NOT a disease; nor is it limited to the human species. I find it quite mind-boggling whenever I encounter someone who thinks gays are somehow 'unclean' - we can only look forward to an era when such things as sexual orientation, race, colour, etc. will no longer dominate human thoughts. I'd give it another couple of hundred years, though. *sigh*

True, many muslims are violently against homosexuality. However, even secular Communist China considered a disease a while ago. People seriously need to change their attitudes.

It's because of things like this that I prefer the term 'nonsexual' as opposed to 'asexual'. Now, break the word into two parts. Non and sexual. Non sexual. As in 'I am not sexual'. I experience no sexual attraction and have near no sex drive.

I hate when straight couples flaunt there straightness: holding hands, getting married (and having it recognized in all states), making babies. I mean, I'm fine with heterosexuality and all, as long as they don't do it in front of my face!

I think this is probably the safest place to be "expose" youself as homosexual, because if somone attacks (which no one has yet), then you can easily turn off your computer, go back to bed, and sodomize your lover.

besides, im assuming that the majority of us on here who are proclaiming our same-sex tendencies are pretty open, even in real life. if we can take the discrimination on the streets, we can take it on the forums.

So, since we're discussing sexuality issues (sort of), how attracted to the same (or opposite) sex do you have to be to be considered bisexual in your eyes?

Honestly, I think most people are partly bisexual, but there is a varying scale. Depending on my mood, I range between about 60/40 to 75/25 straight/gay. Does that make me bisexual? Or do I have to be closer to 50/50?
Europa Maxima
01-12-2005, 03:53
As long as you are attracted so much to the same sex so as to have sex with it and at the same time be attracted to the opposite sex, you are bisexual. It's true that most people are bisexual, yet I think their preference in the same sex is so marginally low it hardly counts. Likewise, some people's preference in the same sex is so high that attraction to the opposite sex is non existent.

Kinsey developed a scale, 1-6 (i think), and he believed that everyone fell somewhere inbetween these numbers. I personally feel as though sexuality is too fluid and elusive to be categorized, but the human obsession is to categorize everything. In that case, I pretty much consider myself a lesbian; although I don't restrict myself from the possibility of being with a man (gael garcía bernal, how i love thee), but the instances in which i am attracted to a man are far less that those when i feel a connection to another woman. i guess i would put my numbers at 80/20 queer/straight.

oh and also, regarding "how bisexual" -- it doesn't matter your percentages, it matters how you define yourself. i have a friend who says she 80/20 straight to gay, but she considers herself bi because doesnt like the idea self-restriction. myself on the otherhand, while i may have the same percentages (in the inverse) don't really consider myself bisexual because i dont actively seek relationships with men.

Hey, since I have deduced from context clues (yes, i know, i should be a detective) that you are both males, and since this seems to be the LGBTQI thread, how are gay and lesbian relations in your community?

according to curves magazine, i live in one of the lesbian-est cities in america, so i have to admit i dont run into gay men very often. but when i do, or when i did in my previous state, there always seemed to be this tension. one time i had a man tell me that i was "a good dyke" because i wasnt "all gross and hairy" like the others. and although ive never heard any women say things to that affect, there always seems to be this cloud that overshadows everything when gay and lesbian relations are mentioned.

have you noticed this, or am i making it up?

I actually just get really flattered. I mean, I have a girlfriend and all (I'm a guy), but I still appreciate a compliment (which is really what being hit on is). I generally play along, actually much more than I with girls that I'm not interested in.

Anyway, funny story. So at a summer camp I was at, a gay guy and a lesbian girl were in his room after the mandatory "one sex (or no sex, depending on what the word means) in a room" lights out policy came into effect. When they were caught, they were both forced to clean some stuff in the morning. One of those bizarrely ironic things.

I consider myself to be bisexual, meaning that I find women and men equally attractive (for anyone who hasn't figured it out yet, I am female). I don't care if people call me confused or just plain horny, I do not find either of those descriptions to accurately portray how I feel, which is that both genders have equally attractive qualities to me.

Now for my question. My best friend is gay. He has been with a woman in the past, maybe a couple (I'm not certain), and says that he can't stand women in general. Except me apparently. Whenever he is around me without the presence of his husband, he is constantly groping me in various places. Usually I just laugh and smack him playfully, telling him to stop teasing me. I am wondering why he flirts with me so brashly when it seems to go against his nature. I don't want to do anything with him and would rather just keep our friendship, but if he's gay why is he constantly all over me? A little insight anybody?

The first serious relationship is hard to get over, but eventually you just have to move on. Boys can be jerks, no?

I wonder if straight guys can appreciate beauty in other guys Its always intrigued me.

I've known straight guys who can - and do so openly. I've known others who I think refrain from admitting it because they might be seen as being gay.

I think a lot of what we admit as beautifiul comes from social conditioning, and that really isn't how it should be. People stare at me when I say another woman is hot, but I see no problem with it (and neither does my boyfriend, as long as I don't run off with her =). But there is an even higher stigma on a man admitting that another guy is attractive, especially if the guy is straight and isn't actually sexually attracted to him.

I actually know a lot of straight guys that have no problem commenting on beautiful men. They usually include disclaimers, like "I don't want him, but he is hot," or "However I feel, I can tell that he's hot."

I don't feel the need to qualify. I simply (and often do) say that another guy is attractive. I kind of enjoy the sexual ambiguity that comes along with it. Exposing people's prejudices without being open about it, essentially.

I have straight friends who will admit another guy is a "stud" or that "if i were gay, I'd do him" (The later specifically of one of my friends on Ryan Cabrera on his MTV show). If straight guys are comfortable enough with their own sexuality I've noticed that they don't have a problem admiting if another guy is cute.

Or simply just say, "it doesn't float by boat, if if you like it, well, good for you" - thats the mature way of putting it.

For me, if a person likes having sex with a female - well, good on ya, fill your boots and enjoy yourself; but for me, it 'isn't my bag baby' :p

True, its like the issue about guys complimenting each other; hell, giving another guy a hug has recently just become a new phenomenon; but then again, it has to do with the whole masclunity and expectations of it and the double standard that surrounds it.

If a female goes off and tries something non-stereotypical in the way of a job, or wears something that is considered 'masculine', no one gives it a second thought, but if a guy does the same thing, there are big questions about his sexuality, as if some how, the way he acts is the defining factor as to which way he swings :)

Straight men are definitely capable of appreciating beauty in other men, though as has been said, social conditioning mostly keeps them from saying so.

Most of my straight, male friends are quite happy to comment on cute guys once they have a few drinks and their inhibitions are lowered, some even go so far as to state that whatever guy would be a good lay without qualifiers. Only a couple of them are comfortable enough to make such comments without being intoxicated, though, unfortunately. One of my good friends even propositioned once because he said he wanted to try the whole "gay sex" thing and see what it was like. It's sad that he's straight, because he was pretty good, despite hesitance and inexperience. Ah well, such is life, I suppose.

As a gay man, I have no problem telling someone that whatever woman is gorgeous or hot, or whatever. It IS possible to appreciate beauty in another person without any sexual strings attached. Only idiotic social conventions tell us different.

As a straight guy, I'm always slightly amused at the theory that we've all got a little gay in us. Yes, I have opinions on other males' looks. If you put Peewee Herman next to Brad Pitt and ask me which is the better looking guy, I'm going to say Brad Pitt, of course. If you put a three-legged mutt with one eye, and a skin condition next to a purebred Great Dane, and ask me which is better looking, guess which one I'll pick.
Of all the gay guys and lesbians I know, and I know a few, I can't think of one who I don't respect, if not just for the the bravery to be who they are. That doesn't mean I think everyone of them is superdooper.
Bottom line, as far as I run my life is, you judge people individually, regardless of all the myriad forms they take. That's actually a big part of what makes life interesting.
If I had been born a woman, I'd have no choice but to be a lesbian.

JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED!!!!!

Yes i relise the bible says that homosexuality is a sin but it says that alot of other things are sins as well. I sin how are my sins any worse than any one elses???? THERE NOT!!!!
So I guess the point i'm getting at here is leave these nice people alone and just accept them for who they are.
And if you are going to fire your religious beliefs at other people then maybe you should read ALL of the content and not just pick the points you like the best to make others feel bad about themselves and you feel good about yourself.

For the record, said rash is not welcome on female genitalia either.

I'm bisexual, and I once had a friend ask me whether women were better than men at going down. I replied (honestly) that the only reason women edge ahead is because I've yet to have a female sex partner who wore stubble.

Just think about it, lads: that's such a lovely region on the female body, right? So why do you want to take sandpaper to it? Be kind to the vagina, and it will be kind to you!

sorry Bottle, but I just gotta ask...

Would a beard be better then?
A well-tended beard is definitely better than stubble. I'm guessing because with a beard the hairs are longer, so they're more likely to be brushing up along the flat of the hair, whereas with stubble it's the point of the hair that is poking into tender regions.

Must be because she said "vagina" xD

Makes me think of that scene from Varsity Blues: "Everybody say it with me: pee-nis, pee-nis, pee-nis, vah-gi-nah, vah-gi-nah, vah-gi-nah!"
