No, not video game wargames. The boardgame variety. Generaly (but not always) with square counter, and a paper mapsheet. They generaly simulate historical battles like Watterloo. The most famous wargames are "RISK", and "Diplomacy."

I've always found Risk more fun on a computer, when I don't have to mess around with dice.

Play a real wargame.

Warmachine (http://privateerpress.com/WARMACHINE/default.php)

At least you're not playing Warhammer 40k I guess...

Is that a mickey-take of WH40k? Seriously?

If not: Are the rules as similar as the models?

hey 40k is good (admitadly it would be nice if the models wern't so expensive...... but the system is a good one)

I really like the spin offs from the main games workshop games

like battlefleet gothic (who doesn't love spaceship battles)
bloodbowl (a bit like american football, except with more violence, and ogres who wouldn't love that)
necromunda (gang warfare gotta love that)
epic (really huge battles very good)
warmaster (looks good but haven't played it as yet though I know for a fact there are versions for real world history)

Risk has no excuse for being on a computer, dice make that game real. The only wargame allowed on computers is Hearts of Iron

Yep, I like the old school wargames. But Risk was always more of a parlor game.

Real wargamers play things like ASL or WSIM. ;) (Diplomacy is very good as well).

Me and some friends have been averaging about two games a week of the Lord of the Rings edition of Risk.

Man that game is awesome. :)

However...I've been seriously thinking that we need a new game. Any recommendations?? I've been considering Axis and Allies, but any input would be welcome.

Is that a mickey-take of WH40k? Seriously?

If not: Are the rules as similar as the models?

It was created by an ex-GW employee (and there's a lot of them about making very good games that GW wouldn't risk, check out Andy Chamber's stuff at redstargames.com and Matt Sprange's work at Mongoose Publishing).

The rules are very different, check out the quickstart rules up there. Put it this way, in 40k a dreadnought just hits things. In Warmachine it headbutts picks them up, throws them at other things then tramples on them. And assuming there's anything left it can just punch the living daylights out of the wreckage (I love my Kodiaks :p).

It's a lot more about the army commander and getting your troops to work together than 40k (which turned into a game of target-selection really)

And the models, well, how far can you get away from the game that ripped off every single fantasy novel since Lord of the Rings and every Sci-fi since I, Robot?

Seriously?

I used to play 40k myself but it got boring. And then GW brought out LotR and proceeded to make at one and the same time their best models and the worst ruleset for a mini game since H.G Well's Little Wars.

And I got bitter over the constant SMurf lovin from GW. There's meant to be a million of them right? So how come they have more armylists then the damn Orks who, by fluff are the most diverse and crazy lot out there?

Risk & Diplomacy are excellent, as is King Maker. Of the Warhammer games, I've only ever played the Necromunda version a few times, but I really liked it.

wow... You remember Kingmaker?
I love warhammer and all of Games Workshop...they are the greatest even if they are the most commercial...

At the moment I try to decide, which army I want to enlarge : Gondor, Rohan, Mordor or Isengart...

Yep, cool board game about the Wars of the Roses. I loved it when I was 10-18 age. I always struggled to find others who were interested in playing. Haven't played it for it quite a few years.

That'd really stretch my memory, trying to remember all the rules. I don't even know where the game is anymore. I think my brother in law may have ended up with it.

ASL is great, the original SL wasn't too bad I had about 70 Boards in the end... almost enough for a division in the attack <G>(haven't played in years though) also used to play diplomacy supremacy and 7th Fleet

I love Risk. Its just really long though. At one point i was playing four people and I was a super power as US and my other friend was Russia. Oh boy did we have fun having a cold war and watching the others duke it out while we waited

Then theres the ever classic Aixs and Allies.
