Music in film

I like music. I also like movies. I think movies can be improved or weakened by their scores. I thought the Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet was good, but I thought the music detracted from the actual film. I thought the music in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves kicked ass and added that extra zip to the film, although, I don't think it quite captured all the emotion of the story.
Personally, I'd like the London Symphony following me around playing some music (mostly mine, which would probably be sad) to suit any occassion.
Anyway, what are others' opinions of music in film, or examples of scores and soundtracks they like?

I don't know if anyone follows anime much, but the music for the Kenshin OVA1 was amazing. A great soundtrack, great film.

I don't know a whole lot about anime, but my cousin loves it and says the music in some stuff is phenomenal

I originally had planned to be a composer for films, I was a music major who loved movies, it seemed a natch.
Turns out, however, that I am a slow composer and never could compose at a piano. I had to do it on paper with my sax nearby to try out a few lines and then program in the harmonies and hope that worked. I got some good peices out of it (one sax piece was almost performed by a professional group, but the original manuscript was stolen with a backpack and I never restored it...cause I'm an ass...) but it was clear that if I did compose for movies it would be a very select niche.
At the same time I started getting awards for my plays, so that's the direction I went.
I have to disagree strongly about the Prince of Theives...christ o mighty how many refrains of "I Would Die For You" do we need to hear? Started to drive me crazy, I was begining to see the Sherrifs point...
The Howard Shore/Ornette Coleman score for Naked Lunch was pretty fitting. I also like Mickey One by Stan Getz, though I've never seen the movie that goes with it.
I used to make fun of Moricone(sp), but now that I look at those films he really can score a movie.

Bryan Adams can go to hell, for all I care. I was talking about the score, specifically, by Michael Kamen.
I really want to write music for movies, as I write in several different styles, but I lack the confidence to really do anything with my music.

If you mean Trust & Betrayal, then yes, good score and good OAV series. There's a reason why it's on #1 on ANN.

The Naked Lunch score is one of the best IMO. It's rare that the music really fits into a movie like this.
Morricone is also very good. He was never afraid of experiments and strange combinations of instruments. Can't say that about John Williams who gets more and more boring - his Star Wars and Indiana Jones themes were good though.

I know you where. So was I. The problem is that Kamen mined the hell out of the 'love theme' to the point where I was about to start ripping chairs out of the theater and smashing the speakers with them. Granted my judgement might be clouded by having worked in a movie theater at the time...but still...

Perhaps I just don't notice that he uses that particular theme so much. I like music
I love the music off A Bridge Too Far. It is also a class film.

I couldn't imagine trying to write a piece.

Music definitely improves an action sequences. Whatever moron made Terminator 3 made a car chase with no music.

That is kinda foolish, with exception: I thought in the Fellowship of the Ring, during the orc battle in Moria, the lack of music made the action more poignant. And I think music can be more than just something to strengthen the action of a movie, I think music can be used continually: in epic parts; lulls in action or drama; anywhere.
Such as a scene of two people in a coffee shop just chatting could be good with the sounds of dishes clanking together in the background and the murmur of other customers, a light piece can add that extra emotion to the scene.

Am I the only one here who likes the Lord of the Rings soundtracks? Seems to me that Howard Shore did an excellent job with the music, both as a standalone score and especially in matching the tone of the movie.

I loved the soundtracks. I really dunno what's with the people who don't like the music in the trilogy. Perhaps their brains were wired incorrectly.
