What is the best song of all time?

I don't think I've seen a topic on this, but many apologies if it's been done before. So, pretty simple. What is the absolute best song, in your opinion, ever made? No poll, because I don't want to limit or bias you. And for the nitpickers, by 'best', I mean quite simply which one you prefer to listen to above all others.

Not sure. Ghost Love Score by Nightwish is awesome. Therion have made some pretty damn good stuff, but… not sure.

You young'ns and your new fangled music, in my day we listened to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg and were happy for it. Where's the counterpoint in that? The stuff you listen to can't concentrate on more than one note at once. Polyphony is the music of tomorrow.

It was what was piping through my head phones at the moment, so I might have seized upon that a bit early.
The final movement of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is probably better, but I'm far too lazy to make a real comparison between the two.

Impossible question without some genre guidelines. Theres just no way to compare (much less order) Mozart and Johnny Cash, Mingus and Motorhead. The textures, techniques, contexts, and structures are too different. That said, heres a few genre picks

Country- Cocaine Blues, Johnny Cash
Early Metal- Mr Crowley, Ozzy Osbourne/Hallowed Be They Name, Iron Maiden
Hard Rock- Wont Get Fooled Again, The Who
Jazz- Flamenco Sketches, Miles Davis
Goth- First and Last and Always, The Sisters of Mercy
Black Metal- Todeswalzer, Windir
American Folk- Not Dark Yet, Bob Dylan
Power Metal- Bright Eyes, Blind Guardian
60's Rock- While My Guitar Gently Weeps, The Beatles
Blues- Hoochie Coochie Man, Muddy Waters
Punk- My Generation, The Who

General Conrad of Black the terrible.

I didn't fight a Cola war for nothing......

Excerpt of General Conrad Black the terrible, Journal during the first Cola War:

You find yourself on an ancient -- at least in your terms -- battlefield. Your ears ring with the clash of sword against shield and the screams of dying men and horses as arrows rain from the sky like, well, arrows.

You hear a shout close by, and spin around to see two soldiers charging at each other -- one dressed in red, his shield divided by a wavy white ribbon across the middle; the other dressed in blue, with a round shield in red, white, and blue.

"pepsi's got your taste for death, scum!" shouts the soldier in blue. His opponent responds, "Death goes better with Coke, filthy pepsian dog!" They clash again, with little effect --but in the end I was the Victor.

Ok, I can see Voodoo Chile (though I like Hey Joe just a bit more), and I can see White Room, but Fade to Black? C'mon, it isn't even Metallica's best song. I mean, if you're going for Metallica, you've only got One choice.

yeah ok one is a good choice, but the lyrics of FTB just speak to me. like how nobody likes Korn's 4th album (or korn at all lol) but the lyrics are what make it worthwhile...

either way metallica wouldn't be my first choice for best song of all time anyway

Talk about a difficult topic! I don't know how anyone can settle on just one song. It depends on your mood and the type of music that speaks to you, so even the choice you make today might change tomorrow.
But, just to join in the fray, I would have to vote along with the previous poster for Back in Black by AC/DC as being possibly the best rock song. Hell's Bells is also pretty good on the same album. But I won't argue with those that mention some of the other R&R classics.
I noticed that the Motown period was missed almost entirely. Surely one has to at least consider "My Girl" as being on the list. The Temptations had so many good ones.
Then there is the blues. The basis for much of R&R and country is buried in the blues, and there are so many good ones. Sure, Hoochie Coochie man is great, but what about "The Sky is Crying"? Or "(Going to) Kansas City"?
"Folsom Prison" is about the best C&W song, IMO. Although, I have a weak in the knees spot for "Boot Scootin' Boogie" as a result of a certain stripper I saw once in Baltimore.
When it comes to The Who, "Baba O'Reilly" has always been my favorite. Sure, Pink Floyd's "Money" has got to be on the list.
Just about any hit by Jimi Hendrix can qualify, too. "Hey Joe" is incredible.
"Take the A Train" will make it to my list for old jazz. Then there are the old Pop Standards. You gotta admit that Sinatra had a few in there, like "Come Fly With Me". Then there is my personal favorite lyricist, Elvis Costello. Who can argue that "Allison" and "Watching the Detectives" were not great?

I'm sorry. My head is spinning now. The music is swirling around in notes on staffs, much like animation in a cartoon, flying out and encompassing my head. This is way too difficult.

Depending on the circumstances of my mood....

Lost in Hollywood by System of a Down
Join Me by H.I.M.
Truckin' by Grateful Dead
Farmhouse (Northern Lights) by Phish
Only Wanna Be With You by Hootie and the Blowfish
Big Balls by AC/DC
Hotel California by The Eagles
Piano Man by Billy Joel

Those are a couple of my favourites. I wouldn't go as far as to call them "GREATEST SONG EVER!!!!" because I haven't found a song that sits with me as greatest song ever, there's too much out there i haven't listened to.
