Would like to hear what you all think of the new French terror bill coming through parliament. Is this going to far or not far enough. What else would you like to see in a terror bill that possibly isnt covered by ones like these.

The law would make it possible to install video cameras on the public transport system, in places of worship and in shops.
I understand the public transport, and shops, but places of worship?
I would imagine that means "mosques".

I guess. I mean it's not like France still has a problem with Huguenots.

Where is Cardinal Richelieu when you need him?

I don't like it but I'm not surprised. It's France's reaction to the terror bombings in the UK and the recent riots.
Similar to the US's Patriot Act but w/ more cameras.

Stupid three musketeers...(Mmmm, chocolate)
Allowing cameras to be put in "places of worship" seems like a bad idea to me. One step toward the government telling people what religions they can and cannot practice. And we all know how well that has turned out when it's been tried.

Seems to work well in China. When's the last time you heard from a Falun Gong member?
Seriously though, is it all that bad to monitor what's being preached? It could cut down on the number of abortion clinic bombers (I know, they're not a problem in France) and radical islamist murderers.

You mean the ones that commit "suicide" while in prison?

Agreed, but the precedent it sets is the problem. How long will it be before anything Muslim/Christian/Buddhist/Protestant/Catholic/Daoist/Hindu/etc. in nature becomes classified as "hate speech" or "subversive" or anything like that and gets outlawed? Maybe that's a little too close to a conspiracy theory, but it is my fear and why I am against putting cameras in places of worship.

France seems to be a rather level-headed country. I don't think it would take it that far. The farthest it might go is to monitor political speech in houses of worship and penalize them for interfering in the political process.

You might be right. I still worry about what could happen, though. Even level-headed groups of people can do some very un-level-headed things when the right people "inspire" them.

Hey, 20th century history would be pretty boring without mustard gas, death camps, and nuclear weapons.
