Maryland Militia

Me and some people are starting a group, the Maryland Militia, and for our flag, we're ganna have the MM crest in the middle. We're in the process of designing a crest. I'd like to put some libertarian/anarchic/self-reliant/personal freedom/indevidualist symbology in there. Any suggestions?

I hesitate to ask but what is this 'Maryland Militia' going to do?

Hopefully nothing illegal.

Technically, it's a violation of NS rules to advocate any illegal actions.

So far, our only official event was that we held a vigil for Mr. Myagi, in which we screened all the Karate Kid movies. We haven't been around that long. :) But basiclly we're ganna be an armed group that advocates personal freedom and the government backing the hell off. We also plan to do nothing illegal. Or violent, anyway.

Any ideas for stuff to put in the crest?

Really? We seem to have a high number of "I smoke pot!" threads on general, I've noticed.

I make a distinction between legality and morality. Fortunatly, they sync up most of the time.

Moderators tend to notice the advocating of illegal violence or illegal sex long before they notice illegal drugs.

If you plan to do nothing illegal or violent then why does the group need to be armed?

I've long since given up trying to persuade you people that you don't need to own assault rifles for personal protection but even if you as individuals decide to own guns then why integrate it into the group?

On the assumption you're ging to be promoting legal activities, a good symbol is the minuteman.

Well, what's Maryland's state animal/bird/ect.? the Michigan Militia had the Wolverine as a mascot iirc and put it on their crest.

Because we still plan to oppose the government, and people who do so tend to get in trouble, even if they do nothing illegal. You never know when the government is ganna try to trample you. Mostly, the armed part is because it's fun to go to a shooting range or into the forest and shot targets. And a precaution against outside aggression.

Does anyone here have an answer to my origonal question, or is everyone just here to talk about weather the MM should exist or not, and ask what we do? Get up out our grill, ;-)

Damn! I just realised that when I was asked what we do, I should have said "we do it all" and left it at that :)

You don't understand the purpose of a militia?

I assumed that 'Millitia' was a purely figurative term as no sane country would allow people to set up there own mini armies.

I'm wrong aren't I?:(

I like the minuteman idea. So far we have a alligator (I don't remember how, but I think that's our mascot) and a beaver, and that's pretty much it. The rest of the flag is in 4 quadrents:
upper right: the Maryland Flag
upper left the Jolly Rodger
lower right: the Don't Tread On Me flag
lower left: the "have a nice day" smily face

In the center will be our crest.

I can't imagine a group opposing the government legally would have to worry about actual violent retribution. Still I realise I'm hijacking your thread so I'll go away now.:)

I think it's a swell idea.. guns and movies are fun.. maybe throw in a little league bowling and/or booze, and you're set. :)

So.. you're looking for a symbol along the lines of "kooky" or more serious?

A but of both. I'd like the crest to be more serious, though.

As I said, a gator is out mascot, and we fly the Jolly Rodger, so we got out share of "kooky." But yes, I was looking for serious for the crest.

Actually, most adult males in the US are considered to be part of the innactive militia. Different states have different definitions of their militia, but they all exist. The National Guard is generally considered to be the modern militia, but the actual laws refer to it as only the active part. And since the Maryland National Guard can't really help out Maryland when it's stuck in Iraq, it makes a lot of sense to organize parts of the innactive milita. Beyond that, there is freedom of association and the right to keep and bear arms. Although, the federal government does not usually care for these groups.

I'm also thinking a variation of the minuteman logo.. my old school had it as a mascot, and, true enough, it sure is badass.. maybe deck it out with some more modern armament or an interesting hat... the crossed muskets are also popular.. but that may be too cliche.. It's hard to really hit on something unique. It's best to go at it with pen and paper.. much easier that way.

Nah, we're not anarchist extremeist, the MM has no official political stance, we are all just highly individualist, value personal freedom, and don't like an overbearing authority.
