Because it is dishonest and down-right unchristian to steal what someone else wrote and pass it off as yours.

No, seriously. That's kind of bad. If it weren't you, I'd tear into you for it...that's how bad it is. Why pass this off as your own work? AND WHY THE HELL TALK ABOUT YOURSELF IN THE THIRD PERSON?

Going on strict scriptural interpretation you shouldn't even own a gun (except for pure sporting purposes).

The problem I see is that, if you're going to carry it, you need to be willing to pull the trigger when it comes down to it.

If you're not willing to do that then carrying the gun becomes fairly pointless, yes you can threaten but if they are willing to call your bluff? You're fucked.

Personally I plan on getting self-defence classes sometime (maybe that Israeli style, whatever it's called) but in most life I rely on the fact I carry no valuables and that I can look decently threatening at need to avoid trouble.

I live in the UK where owning a gun is illegal for most intents and purposes but I occasionally go airgun shooting and I would like to go hunting or at least use an actual rifle someday. I don't feel threatened enough in my daily life to even carry the knife I take on camp (in a scrap it'd be a chocolate teapot mind).

I know (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10007576&postcount=16). It's a failing of the English language that the word 'you' can be so ambiguous. I meant it in the impersonal, not direct sense.

Thou shalt not kill. If you carry a gun then you either intend to kill if it comes down to it or you will not and the criminal is now the proud owner of a brand spankin' new gun.

Neither of which is a good outcome.

Thou shalt not kill. If you carry a gun then you either intend to kill if it comes down to it or you will not and the criminal is now the proud owner of a brand spankin' new gun.

Neither of which is a good outcome.I don't buy that. There's nothing wrong with killing in defense of human life. "Thou shalt not kill" is a bad translation. It should be "thou shalt not murder".

That depends on the translation. Many versions now claim that "murder" is closer than "kill". I'm not advocating either, just stating that there is some ambiguity involved in that particular statement.

One does not always sound like a pompous ass when using "oneself". But perhaps one needs a new tailor, because ones clothes are absolutely dreadful? Away with you, beggah!

It's good to know that some of the people here spend most of their time Googling every block of text that gets posted. You don't seem to get the idea that it is very bad to plagarise someone else's work and pass it off as your own. If that were my work you stole, I'd seriously consider legal action. As a writer, it's absolutely the worst sin you can commit against someone.

As an annoyed poster and as a writer, I think you should quit digging a hole for yourself and retract your attempt to cheat someone else out of their due credit.

So how come Jesus was all on the whole 'turn the other cheek' business.

Maybe the actual translation should be 'murder' but if Jesus doesn't want you hitting people, why would he let you shoot them?
