Which of the following attack helicopters would you choose to be the primary gunship of your armed forces? Assume you're in charge of a first-world nation that can afford the costs and such.

Mangusta (Italy) (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/agusta/)
Tiger (Germany/France) (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/tiger/)
Rooivalk (S. Africa) (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/rooivalk/)
Havoc (Russia) (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/mi28/)
Black Shark (Russia) (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/ka50/)
Super Cobra (USA) (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/supcobra/)
Apache (USA) (http://www.army-technology.com/projects/apache/)

Whichever one they're making Soundwave into for the upcoming Transformers film.

I'm wondering why a country like South Africa would want to spend the resources on developing an attack helicopter?

So they can export it to their neighbors who are constantly engaged in internal civil strife.

Actually, I'm reconsidering... if I had to equip a nation, I'd equip it for a more likely scenario than one that required high speed and precision.. I'd build some huge, heavy, well-armored tandem-rotor Chinook-like monsters that could just lob massive amounts of bombs and rockets down on an ill-equipped civilian uprising of some kind.. kinda like a noisy, low-flying ac-130... sweet.. :)

Ahh, yes! That's it. I would have hoped that with the new government they would have a change in philosophy.

none as I believe it to be a bad idea to be dependent on other countries for arms.

anyway I don't like the attack helicopter concept, i'd probably use what ever helicopter I used for transport but armed as a anti tank support weapon for pop up attacks on armour probably in combination with ground attack air craft

Nope. One of the significant exporters of arms and ammunition on the African continent (behind China) is South Africa.

After lengthy evaluation sparsed between responses to other threads, I hope that Soundwave's vehicle form, if indeed a helicopter as I am led to believe, will be a Havoc. It gets my vote.

Havoc - basically I like the philosophy of the rugged equipment that can operate from the most basic of staging areas with minimal technological support... besides in terms of bang for buck, well I don't think it can be beaten economically.

Yeah, and without the wristwatch :D

I voted for the Tiger. Not that it is the best attack helicopter there might be (why's the Comanche not included in the poll?) but it is partially a German product and I'd support them.

Hell, I wouldn't settle for anything less than a Leo2A6 either to arm my ground forces :D

P.S.: Probably playing way too much Comache - I always thought that the Ka-50s were called 'Werewolf's?

The Tiger!

I actually like the Apache more, but they need to fix the problem of Hellfire missiles melting the back bits of the helicopter when fired from the wrong side!

Russian KA-52 Alligator is superior to all existing combat helicopters as far as weaponry goes. All it needs is a little bit better avionics, sort of like the Turkish Erdogan- the helicopter itself is Russian, but the avionics are Israeli.

While not included in the poll, and not an "attack helicopter" in the true sense of the word, I would go with the Mi-25 Hind (at least I think it's the Mi-25)

It has two extra wing pylons for ordinance, AND carries an eight man infantry squad with full gear.

How can you go wrong!?! :)
