Since is no longer a question of whether or not Canadians want elections (see: Canadian Elections: Now or Later? (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=454010)), I was wondering what the reaction was to the Non-confidence Motion?
Canadians face winter vote (http://www.cbc.ca/story/canadavotes2006/national/2005/11/29/elxn-called.html)
Was it justified, or is this just further proof of Harper and his CPC's undying ambition to be the ruling party? After all, they were one of the biggest delay factors in this minority government, with their constant push for elections.
In this voter's less than humble opinion...
The biggest insult of all is the fact that the costs are being shouldered by the voting public. And it'll be even more insulting, though ironically just if there is another Liberal minority. It'll be even more amusing if there is a Liberal majority.

Damnit a month before my 18th:mad: My parents don't face voting in the winter. Vancouver doesn't have winter, just rain.

Uhm... I didn't say 'snow', I said winter and last I checked, the northern hemisphere has winter, regardless of location... :p

Well, if the weather's bad, that'll probably cramp the elderly vote, and the young folk who barely care anyway. So I predict that the Liberals will be in charge again.

I've added a poll! And yes, I put in the mod option...

Well to most people, the problem with a winter election is that snow is going to cause it to be difficult to get out to a voting station.
Besides, how can 10C and a week and a half of non stop rain be considered winter?

I hope the Communist Party has an early run at one of the seats like last time. Man, that was fun to watch, cheering them on from the living room.

I would vote NDP, but am too young.:(

Really? What riding was that in?

Please, we're Canadians. If you can't handle snow, you don't deserve to be here. :)

I think it was in Missassauga (damnit, I hate trying to spell it!)
who voted for the green party? Do you even know what the green party of Canada stands for?

Well, I live in Vancouver. The fact that it snows once a year makes us a lil less skilled with snowshoes.:p

It was indeed somewhere in Ontario, you might be right. My friends and I (The ones who care about politics anyway) were sitting around cheering for them, with images of some dude with a Lenin-esque look about him sitting in Parliament.

Wasn't that the Marxist-Leninist Party candidate that randomly had a 151-vote lead and then lost horribly? :P

Sorry, but part of being socialist is being afraid of soap.:p
Frightening stuff, that soap is...

If that's the way it's gonna be, just remember that this is like cleaning a bathroom. What your smelling right now is the overpowering aroma of some kind of air freshener junk, laid out after the Tories didn't flush last time they used it.

The question is, do you?
I don't care if people choose not to vote for the Green Party of Canada because they don't like what it stands for, in fact, I fully support that.
What I don't want is people to choose not to vote for the Green Party of Canada because they think they know what it stands for. The Canadian Green Party is considerably different from the Green Party anywhere else in the world. They're taking an innovative and progressive look at governing -- and a new look at a lot of old issues.
If you've looked and don't like it, more power to you.
If you haven't, then maybe you should. It might not change your mind, but it may open your horizons a bit to what could be possible.

This election is a waste of time. No movement in the polls, and Hapless thinks he'll get movement in the results. Assinine.
To recap the current state of affairs:
Unemployment at a 30-year low.
Dollar up 15% since MArtin took office.
We're still not in Iraq as Harper wanted us to be.
Interest rates low.
Balanced budget.
We're still not in Iraq as Harper wanted us to be.
Trade surplus up.
inflation down
Personal income taxes dropping.
US caving on softwood.
oh yes, and We're still not in Iraq as Harper wanted us to be.
But Stevie the Wonder-wuss is gonna come in and "fix" all that for us. Because he's looking out for Canadian values..... like his opposition to Gay marriage and his voting last week against a tax cut to the middle class.
But now he's gonna promise..... TAX CUTS! Yeah, where were you last week Hapless?
And he's gonna promise us ..... CLOSER TIES TO THE US! How you gonna do THAT monica? Some Presidents you can work with. GW answers a higher power and believes in his own infallibility. you're either for him, or against him. Which for us means you're either sucking his dick, or you're exercising our sovereign rights. This has not been the case with every President, but it IS the nature of this one.
And he's promising us...... SPENDING! OK, tax cuts AND massive spending.... now how has that affected the American budgetary position? Oh, and what are you spending on this time? Last time you thought that what are military most needed was a pair of aircraft carriers..... numbskull.
Did anyone catch his speech last night? He offered nothing except sophistries and platitudes. No specifics, except his dunderheaded moment when he said something like: "How bad are the Liberals? So bad that they chose US to run against!"
Ummmmmmmm, you mean they have a choice? Or do you mean that there are better options than you to run against? Or.... what the hell was that supposed to mean Stevie?
Except that you're an idiot.....
So, to prognosticate the next two months:
Bitterness. Attacks. Wild accusations. Wilder promises. Final Result: Pretty much the same.
Thanks for nuthin' guys......

And here I just thought it was a normal Canadian conversation regarding what qualified as "winter".
Wasn't that the Marxist-Leninist Party candidate that randomly had a 151-vote lead and then lost horribly? :P
That was hilarious. Not that they had a lead and lost horribly (I mean, no one expected them to do anything, after all) it was how all the news studios had to frantically dash around and find a symbol to represent the party on the leader boards. And how all the commentators were so confuzzled, and had to explain that it was just an anomaly of the early returns.
Oh man, I was nearly in tears I was laughing so hard. But then, I'm a geek and like politics.

That sums it up nicely.
I'd say that there is the issue of corruption, but, it's just white noise at this point. There has been government corruption as long as there has been any form of a government.

The non-confidence vote was a means for the opposition to present themselves as the heroic defenders of the people, but really all it did was force unnecessarily an action that was going to happen anyway.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Prime Minister Martin promise to call an election following the Gomery Inquiry? So, what makes the opposition the heroic defenders of the people when the PM already made such a promise?
They ought to have waited and if (though I doubt it), he didn't make good on that promise, they'd have gone out looking innocent, instead of the evil that wouldn't let the government work.

That's exactly it. The whole vote was unnecessary, yet they herald themselves like they have accomplished something significant "for the Canadian people!"

Depends on whether they get campaign funds from Target corp., I'd say. :p
Honestly, who calls for elections during the winter holiday season? I hope they're not trying to sway anyone's opinion; I'd think that no one would be paying attention over the next two months.

And it was hardly for the Canadian people, given that majority opinion was that we weren't ready for elections and that we wanted to wait until after the Gomery Inquiry. We also wanted our government to govern instead of playing petty, meaningless games.
Ever watched question period? Wow, the mud and horse feathers really fly! There is so much mud slinging and it's going to get dirtier for the elections.
